Stalking the Elusive Wild Columbia Tiger Lily

We have wonderful wildflowers in the Columbia River Gorge in Oregon.  I love many of them.  But my favorite is the wild Columbia Tiger Lily.  I await their bloom each year with anticipation.  Last week I took Kristi with me to see if they were in bloom.. we only found plants with buds on them.  So, when I returned from swimming I asked Kristi if she wanted to go back and see if they'd bloomed.  Success!  One plant was in bloom.  We snapped away at the flower - and all of mine were fuzzy!  Boo!  But Dayle and Travis had gone to my friend Sally's house to talk to her about a car she wanted them to buy from her - she lives in Bridal Veil - so Kristi, the boys and I drove on down to visit, too.  After a short visit we drove on towards Multnomah Falls as there is a patch of the lilies there too.. and success!  I got some good shots there.  These darlings are small, about the circumference of an egg.  I love the dark red spots on them!

Aren't they adorable, bobbing their heads in the breeze in the grassy roadside?

Once a year they bloom for a short time.  I never want to miss it.

So.. to finish the story of the car.. we are now the owners of a 1955 blue and white Chevrolet Bel Air 4 door.  It needs some work but Dayle and Travis are excited to bring bring it back to running well.  I found this image on the internet, but will show you photos of the real thing in my next post.  They are picking the car up today and bringing it home.  It will be here when I get back from swimming.  :-)

So yesterday Dayle volunteered with me at Multnomah Falls as my friend Shirley had plans to drive to Seattle and visit friends and family there.  We had a really good day with lots of interesting visitors.  I went to get us a couple iced mochas and walked up to get a few shots of the falls.

These images show you how thin the falls can get when there is not much rain and the snow has melted.  The good part is the falls never stop flowing as it's fed by a spring.

It was a warm day and when I walked up towards the falls I was met with a cool moist breeze from the waterfall.

There were lots of little flowers in bloom along the way.

Hello Stinky Bob!

My granddaughter Jenna made a little bowl on a potters wheel and glazed it with a blue color and look at the prize she won in a school art show!  It just thrills me to see that Jenna inherited my art gene.. I was really into ceramics and we even had a whole pottery studio in our barn at our last house.  Kick wheel and electric kiln and all.  I'm so proud of her!

It's a gorgeous day here and I'm soon to pack my swim bag and head to the pool.  I hope you're having fair weather where you are.  ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  1. Those tiger lily's are beautiful such a vibrant colour. The Chevrolet is a dream, looking forward to seeing more of it, I have just shouted my husband through to have a look, we definitely have a case of car envy. Its so nice to see the young ones get on, congratulations to her. Have a great weekend.

  2. Oh good heavens!!!
I opened your blog this afternoon to see the first car I ever owned. And it was the same color combo but had only two doors and I loved how you could roll down the windows and there wasn't the window post divider. You could have knocked me over with a feather. Had to show DH - he laughed and said they sure made them to last way back when.
My Chevy story had a sad ending though. The block developed a crack in the head and we (folks & me) didn't have the money to have it repaired. Oh well - it's good to know they're still out there and still going strong.
Just love the Tiger Lily - so pretty!

  3. What a gorgeous little bowl, well done Jenna! Love the tiger lilies. We had domestic ones in the garden when I was little, you have reminded me. The car is amazing. We used to have neighbours who had something similar in pale pink, it was fantastic. They used to hire it out for weddings. Love the place called Bridal Veil, how unusual! I'm wishing you and Dayle a good weekend. CJ xx

  4. Hello Teresa - such pretty flowers. The little bowl is gorgeous - clever Jenna. Super car. Not the same but reminded me of my son's wedding! They had a Pontiac&Cadillac to take principal guests to church and then onto Reception. I truly enjoyed travelling in them. X

I love those tiger lilies. In the countryside here in summer there are loads of white Trumpet lilies. I'll have to take a photo. You do live in a beautiful part of the world! Xox

  7. Hi Teresa, your posts are always so interesting. I was raised in Northern Indiana and picking wild flowers was something I did all the time. I miss that. We do have wildflowers in our desert area, but they are not for picking and making pretty bouquets . . . they are all home to thousands of tiny critters. So, if you want little guests, you can pick them, but be prepared for company, LOL. If I ever make it to the falls again, I hope that you will be working; I would love to meet you:)

  9. The wild flowers are so pretty, and the variety of flowering plants you have at your home is eye candy. But tell me, do you never have any problems with the wild animals doing any damage to your plants? This has bee one crazy month, within 3 days my brother trapped 2 pesky ground hogs that had taken up residence under my back porch and deck. They were huge, male and female. I'm sure I would have had an infestation of babies before the end of next month. Now it is the raccoons. I will have to blog about the troubles, it gives me a headache just thinking about it all. Your granddaughters little blue bowl is sweet. maybe she will take a genuine interest in that craft and gift you with more pretty things. Your dress form (from previous post) is just what the doctor ordered, every woman needs one and they are great for displaying garments of all sorts. I think your shawl is looking quite spiffy on it. I love mine but my Ella is not adjustable like the one you have. Your falls is something I would never tire of looking at. Oh, and please I hope you were not taken aback when I mentioned on my blog about my being content to stay home, oh such is my hum drum quiet life. I wish I had more gumption to be on the go more like so many of my blogger friends. I guess a lot of it stems from all the years of dealing with the public in nursing.

  10. Nice to find the tiger lily. Thanks for sharing. aw, the falls, glad they are always running! I stop there sometimes to just make sure! Ha! Wow, a car as old as me! nice and hope it all works out good for Dayle. Congrats on your granddaughter's pottery. I enjoy those type of this. I did ceramics when we lived in New Mexico. It was fun and Phil did it with me for something to do together. Now we like to work on our computers, but he's in another room. Oh well, at least he's home! I'm working through photos and got a few printed out for cards to send off soon. So many photos! Hard to keep up and post them on my blog but it's fun anyway to look through them again. It's been quite warm here as well. Have a good weekend!

  16. Pretty lillies. Did I ever tell you that I used to eat orange lillies when I was a little girl? I'm surprised I survived, all of the strange things we did as kids? Oh I love that car. How nice that the boy are helping you to get it running. Family projects are fun. It was also nice that you and Dayle can volunteer together sometimes. We want to find something that Dennis and I can do together when he retires. I till have a little boy I made in pottery art class in 7th grade. I used it in the kitchen for pens, etc. Fun that Jenna enjoys it like you do.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  20. Tiger lilies are so pretty and so cheery - it's always a thrill to spot them on my bike rides here. Ours are larger than yours, I think - probably about 4" across - but lovely at any size!

    Nice work Jenna!
