More Zoom

Hello my friends.  As a photographer.. I love things that take photos.  I use my iPhone, my pocket sized Lumix and I also have a "Big Girl Camera" Nikon.  I've been spoiled by the Lumix for ease of use and portability and mainly for the lack of having to change lenses.  I tried to learn to use the BGC.  I really did.. well.. I like easy.  My Lumix DMC-ZS40 (with a 30 zoom) - the one that fits in my pocket - has a great zoom and good photos and I love it.  But it came up short with with really far shots.  Case in point, the moon.  It did pretty good but didn't get as close as Kristi's "bridge" camera with a 50 zoom.  So, over the last year or so I've been looking at acquiring a middle-sized camera - one with a better zoom but was still mostly POS (point-and-shoot) automatic.  I finally pushed the buy button on Amazon and am now the proud owner of a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ1000 with a 60 zoom.  I have only had it for a few days and it's been raining since it arrived, so I don't have a lot of test photos to share.  But the kids just brought home a flat of strawberries so I took some images with the new cam and the same shots with the iPhone to see the difference.  The image below is the new guy.  I'm pretty pleased with the accuracy of the color and sharpness of the image.

The photo below is the iPhone.  Not bad but too bright.. the accuracy and clarity don't hold a candle to the new cam.

The whole flat.. yes they taste as good as they look.  Love the true color of this!

The iPhone.. nice image but too bright.

Here's the new kid on the block.  I almost titled this post - "Waiting For The Moon"... as the true test of this upgrade will be moon shots and more.  I could not get good zooms of the swans that visit near Rooster Rock.. can't wait to try it next year with this camera.  Also, at the beach, I couldn't get clear shots of the lighthouse that is far offshore at Cannon Beach.  It will be fun to see how this does.

I took my camera to go out and snap some things yesterday and I was stopped dead at the door.. too rainy.  But this is the shot I got.. nice true color.

And so.. that's it for now until I can get more shots to see how it does.  I still cannot swim as the cough is still there, but hopefully soon.  I went to a meeting on Wednesday and had to leave the room twice due to coughing spells.  It was embarrassing.  I am going to a DAR State Conference tomorrow for lunch and dinner -- hopefully I will make it through okay.  Kristi is doing pretty good with her foot surgery.  But hopefully both of us will be back to normal soon.  Thanks for all your thoughts and prayers for us!  Here's wishing you a wonderful weekend.. any exciting plans?  ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  1. Even viewing this on my iPhone I think I can see the difference! Interesting! I am glad you are getting out and about a little bit and also glad that Kristi is getting better. I am finishing the trim on a preemie blanket this weekend and planning for two weeks of camping the first two weeks of June! Am at the pool and wishing you and yours well πŸ’žπŸŒΊπŸ™‚

  4. Wow! That is a huge difference Teresa. I think your new camera will be just what the doctor ordered for you. :-). I'm also glad you're getting out and about a bit and will pray that your cough will get better soon. I've also been thinking of Kristi. Is the inactivity getting to her? I had a migraine last night at bedtime that is still hanging around today. It's only my 6th migraine in my life and I can't imagine how people deal with them regularly. I've gotten absolutely nothing done today. Just the last hour I can stand to look at the iPad to read blogs. Yuck. Have a lovely weekend my friend and I hope you feel perfectly well very soon.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  6. another camera? LOL! I bought strawberries today as well but only half a flat at Baumans this afternoon. We had a nice day out today, warmer then I expected but still warm a long sleeved shirt as it was chilly this a.m. I am going to plant my tomatoes this weekend, even if it rains! They are getting too big for their little pots! Now I need to go make some dinner. Hopefully your cough will subside soon. Honey in tea helps. Hugs!

  7. Hope you and Kristi will be back to your old selves soon! I love the shots from your new camera. The detail on the strawberries is remarkable! I have an older Lumix and it was my "go to" until iPhone. And there is the BGC, too, but it is too darned heavy to be handy! There might be a new Lumix in my future, me thinks. :-) Have a great weekend! We are boarding a cruise to Alaska tomorrow in Seattle.

  8. I swear by hot rum toddies for the cough. Squeeze 1 -2 Meyers lemons (more juice than the big lemons we get at store), 1 tbsp local Honey, rum (optional) and hot water.
My son just bought a Canon Rebel and his IG photos are way better than the iphone. I'm tempted, but I recall lugging all that Minolta (before digital) camera stuff around when kids were babies and I don't think I'm all that keen. If I do get the camera bug, I'll remember to have a look at your Lumix's

  11. Fabulous photos with your new camera Teresa. Still have to get to grips with the pocket sized one ( sigh) Hope your cough goes soon. DH had one before Christmas, awful lasted ages, then it came back - he had to leave during my nephew's wedding ceremony as could not stop coughing :-( dreadfully embarrassing but nothing you can do. Hope Kristi is finding things to keep her occupied. Hugs Anne x

  12. Your new camera looks brilliant Teresa. You and I do love our Panasonic Lumix lenses! I don't even photoshop anything other than my card challenge cards and that's because I watermark them. The details are so life like on your strawberries, looking forward to seeing some moon shots...the last full moon has just past.... Get well soon xx

  14. Oh my.. now I want some fresh strawberries! I definitely see the difference in the photos. I notice that there is more DEPTH with the BGC and it looks more real. I have a newer Canon point and shoot which I love for outdoor shots, but I realized right away that it just doesn't show any dept to most photos.. they look very "flat". I have a small Lumix also that was my sisters, and though it's only a point and shoot, it takes much better photos with more depth. It's stored somewhere so I need to go find it! I bet very reader of today's blog is going to go out and get some strawberries! Get well soon...... hugs.. Marilyn

  18. I'm sure you'll be taking some great photos with your new camera. I tend to use my phone for everything now, but do break out the big girl Canon when I want to snap the moon or birds. Unfortunately, I was taking it on vacation and never using it much so often opt to just leave it behind. Took me 3 weeks to get over my sore throat and cough. Hopefully yours will be clearing up very soon. Take care.
