PWF Event & Helicopter Ride

Hello my friends!  I hope you had a good weekend.  We had a busy day on Saturday.  We held an event at the Portland Women's Forum State Scenic Viewpoint as one of a series of events put on this summer to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Historic Columbia River Highway.  We had several booths set up and this was our view.  :-)

This is our booth - I'm on the left, then member Betty and President of PWF, Bev.  We represented 3 organizations.  Portland Women's Forum, Friends of Multnomah Falls and the Friends of Vista House.  :-)

Looking out from behind the table.. it was a perfect weather day, warm with a cool breeze.  Lots of people came by to talk to us and learn more about our groups.  I even signed up two new members for PWF and sold some postcards for FOMF.

Below is Wes Post, his great-grandfather was Charles W. Post, famous in our area for doing a series of paintings of the gorge from a tent he set up right on this viewpoint at the turn of the century.  He brought one of his paintings to share with us and book about his famous ancestor.

The beautiful booth of the Friends of the Historic Columbia River Highway put up by Jeanette Kloos, President and founder of the FHCRH - the group that spearheaded the "Season of Celebration" of the Centennial Celebration of the HCRH.

This neat photo op, you could stand behind the antique car and get your photo taken.

Oregon Parks and Recreation Dept. also had a booth, they are the partners of PWF for the viewpoint.  They brought two huge cakes and punch to share with visitors.

A highlight of the day - Peg Willis brought a band of string instrument players all the way from Pendleton, Oregon to play for the event for 2 hours.  What fun that was!!  They played vintage songs from the turn-of-the-century.

I wish I'd videotaped them playing, but I was busy at our booth.

Dayle gave Peg some $$ to treat all the kids to ice cream on their way home.

Peg Willis designed this cross stitch kit and I'd always wanted one, so Dayle got one for me.  New project for the winter!

We also invited a local author to join us during the event - Laura Foster - we bought this book from her and I look forward to reading it.  She also joined PWF and will be giving a program during our Author's Day.  We also found out that she was at Waldo Lake at the same time we were and remembered our shade canopy and rainbow bunting!!  :-)

Now for a change of subject.. look what was hanging out in my sister Denise's backyard!!!  Her easy chair is in a corner of her den with two huge windows and her BBQ is right outside in her view.. she heard a ruckus and saw this guy trying to catch a squirrel that was hiding under her BBQ!  It's a gorgeous Bobcat.  But she lives in the middle of Portland and this is an amazing "neighbor" for her.

Our son Travis and DIL Kristi took the boys to the beach for an overnight trip and on the 2nd day they came across a helicopter company and the three guys got to go up for a short ride!

How exciting for all three of them!!

Hayden didn't want to be up front so Caleb got the cat bird's seat.

Kristi brought home a "Crown of Thorns" (Euphorbia Milii) plant yesterday, have you ever seen one like this?  It's huge and gorgeous!

I love the blotchy color in the flowers -- it's supposed to bring good luck.

So.. off to swim soon.. I hope you have a great day.  ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  1. WOW! You and yours have been having exciting times since I saw you last! The event looked like fun and in such a beautiful location. Your new stitching piece is challenging and will prompt dear memories for you. I hope Denise's bobcat does not come visit our side of town...he is handsome...but I am a scaredy cat! Kristi's new flowers are beautiful! xx

  5. I can practically hear all of the music those young people were playing. Ice cream as a treat for them was a generous and sweet gesture! Your vistas are just amazing.
Bobcat! I would love to see one. Truly I would . THey are elusive here!
I was in a helicopter when I was about ten. Not since! It was amazing to just LIFT off straight up.

  6. There is never an opportunity for grass to grow under your feet. You are one of the busiest ladies I have ever seen. I love visiting your blog and seeing what you are up too. Have a great Labor Day weekend!

  7. I sure enjoyed seeing all of the photos of your event. The cross-stitch kit looks like it would be a lot of fun. Do they sell one of Multnomah Falls in the gift shop? That's one I would like to do and never thought to look for one when I was there. Oh my! A bobcat in the middle of Portland? We had a mountain lion in our yard here in Spokane at the first house we lived in when we moved here. We were just 3 houses from the river and think it followed the river up and was looking for some neighborhood dogs for dinner. Scary indeed. How fun for the boys to ride in a helicopter. I love helicopters. My last ride was around the volcanoes in Hawaii. Such fun. I'll bet you've got tons of fun planned for this weekend. Have the boys started school yet? Our schools start tomorrow. Summer is going too fast.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  9. I've been enjoying your blog ever since I followed up a link from your friend Grace's blog who I found from following a knitting blog in Scotland! We camped at the Cascade Locks KOA earlier this summer and were there the weekend when the oil train fire closed down the freeway. It was a first hand experience learning about the dangers of those trains and gave us a lot to think about. We also visited Multnomah Falls and several other lovely spots before we moved on to Bend. Someday I'd like to revisit your beautiful area and take a ride on the paddlewheel boat (which I learned about from your blog) to see the gorge from the river. Thank you for sharing your photos with us.

  10. It looks like you had a wonderful day, Teresa. I enjoyed seeing the sights with you. I've never been in a helicopter but it sounds like fun. I'm sure my kids would love it. That Ramona book looks really interesting. We are all big Ramona fans at our house. We even have one or two of the books in Spanish from when my husband was studying in Central America. I hope you had a nice time swimming.

  11. Hi Teresa. I just caught up on all of the posts I have missed. What fun things you always do! I love hearing about them!
Your garden blooms are just fantastic! Everything here is just fried to a crisp! Nothing looks lush and pretty, and most has had to be torn up from the ground. I am so ready for some cooler weather! We are having triple digits again.
I loved seeing the salmon your son caught! Wow! I was licking my chops! Kristi's dinner looked fantastic too. We love jasmine rice, and I make it a lot. I made salmon hoisin rice bowls with jasmine rice, the other night, and boy oh boy....wow!
The bobcat...so beautiful! I woke up one night to a noise, several years back, and there on my patio, looking me straight in the eye, was a big ol bobcat!!! Scared me to death.
I am busy here, doing lots of little much needed things to the house. Feathering my nest, and waiting for Fall to arrive.
    Much love,
    Kris

  12. What a great day you had (and put on)....what a wonderful event and if I lived there, I would have gone! So much history to learn. I'm so glad to see the young people too, in the string band.... they will learn history too hopefully and carry it on once us older folks aren't there anymore. Thank you for sharing such wonderful events and the history of that area. I thoroughly enjoy it since I used to drive that old Columbia River Highway with my parents in their old 1949 Chevrolet! I wish I had pictures but they didn't take any and I was too young to know any better. Have never heard of that plant but it sure is beautiful.

  13. You are always doing fun activities! I loved hearing about the history of your area. I loved hearing Pendleton as it brought back memories of the woolen mills. I lived as a child in Idaho and our road trips to Ellensburg, WA would take us through Pendleton. I hope you're having a great week. Hugs, Pat

  16. Oooh how exciting for the boys to have a helicopter ride .... they have more courage than I !! Looks like it was a good day for your special event and the music group look very sweet - I bet it was special for them too. Lovely of Dayle to get you that cross stitch kit - although it will be a lot of work, I know you'll love every stitch as Vista House means so much to you. When I saw that bobcat the other day I wondered what it was. At first I thought it was another friend for Simba. I don't believe we have those type of cats running around here. Maybe out in the bush but not here in the burbs. You'll need to take a bit of a rest after all the excitement of the past few days. xox
