Candlelight and Roses

During these short days of light I love to light some candles to push the darkness away.  I put some candles in the glass holder that my sister gave me and enjoyed the light last evening.

Yesterday the sun was out and it slanted through the dining room as I was passing by so I snapped a photo of the illuminated roses.. so pretty.

I snapped this with my iPhone zoom from my easy chair in the den.. it's heartwarming to have this view during the day.  I worked on the baby blanket I'm making for my nephew's little girls.. played some Scrabble and Words With Friends online.. we had a leisurely day.

One of my favorite Christmas decorations is this porcelain candle holder.. it's a woodland scene with baby forest animals roasting marshmallows over a fire, a lit tree with a nest of eggs and cardinals.  It just charms me.

Kristi and the boys were having lunch at the dining table and they told me to come and see the big bird on the deck.. I identified it as a Mourning Dove.  Neat!

Travis' boss at Nabisco, Jerry and his friend Ernie from work headed off to Long Beach to go crabbing over the weekend, they were at the mouth of the Columbia River!  Boy did they get some big ones!  Dungeness crab!  His boss has a place there where they spent the night.

Here's a close-up of one of them.

They all got their limit, even though it appeared that 3 of their crab traps they left out overnight on Saturday were totally emptied on Sunday and had been moved, the other 4 were full of crabs.. they'd seen some nefarious people the day before nearing one of their traps with a hooked pole before they saw our guys and moved on.  Hmmm.. life on the sea with the occasional pirates!  :-)

This is the haul they brought home!  Last night Dayle picked a whole bag of them for us, I had some with a light dressing of mayonnaise on Ritz crackers for dinner!  YUM!!

I just had to share a photo I just snapped of our tree... sometimes I wish I could leave it up all year I just love it so.. but then it wouldn't be special I guess.  :-)

I'm off to swim today.. they had predicted snow and ice but it's just rain.  Tomorrow we're off to Costco to get our ham and a few other things.  I will make my Potatoes Dauphinoise to go with it and probably some more Broccoli salad.  What are YOU having for Christmas dinner?  ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  1. Beautiful photos Teresa. We have cold and wind today with lots of snow predicted tonight and tomorrow. I'm very tired of winter. No big plans for Christmas. I will probably put a ham in the crock-pot before we go to church. Your tree is just beautiful and I can see why you would like to leave it out. Have a wonderful day my friend.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  2. Last night I had candles lit, too...four candles for the 4th week in Advent and then I lit a beeswax candle in my cobalt blue glass candlestick. I love your little woodland candle holder, as well. I just finished and enjoyed two Christmas novellas set in modern England and red roses were a part of the story. ["Finding Father Christmas" and "Engaging Father Christmas"] I think doves are lovely visitors! Yay for the crab catch and bravo for your swim. We have yet to settle on a menu for Christmas dinner. Yours sounds yummy :) xx

  4. Nummy crabs. I might have to go to Tony's fish market in oregon city to get some for christmas eve. Not sure if I'm working Saturday afternoon. If not, then I want to do a new Prime Rib recipe that involves letting it sit the last two hours in a closed oven turned off. If I am working, then crabs are a super simple meal.
We don't have a tree yet. I'm pretty sure hubby is in charge of this as I am working so many hours. hmmm - might have to light a fire under his butt...your tree is so pretty.

  6. I love the candlelight too and enjoy lighting the advent ring each Sunday along with some beautiful seasonal smelling Yankee candles that were a gift. Your tree looks stunning, I have said it before you are blessed with a beautiful home. Great crab catch. We will be having a turkey dinner followed by a traditional Christmas pudding and mince pies.

  10. I really enjoy Dungerness crab when in WA with family. They got a great haul.

If you want another Words with Friends opponent then email me and I'll give you my player name. I enjoy it too.

Hoping you got the skylight fixed, that story of the ice (I read the other day) did not sound good.

  11. Oh What a lovely tree Teresa. I too love to look at our tree and the lights. I am lighting many candles tonight and all the nights until and including Christmas. I bet I would love fresh crab.

  12. I'm making a Costco ham too, like I do every year. I bought mine on Friday, trying to avoid the rush this week. The tag says it's good through sometime in February, so I just put it in the fridge til the big day. I'm making these scalloped potatoes they were sampling while we were there. I usually make all my side dishes from scratch on a holiday but these were so delicious I decided to get them for a change. I'll make some cranberry sauce, dinner rolls and a green veggie with them. I'm also going easy on dessert with a Marie Callender's coconut pie. I've done enough baking lately. :)

  13. I love those cheery chair backs Teresa - very festive looking. Also those little animals roasting their marshmallows are so cute. Your Christmas dinner sounds good. We're having the usual traditional lunch (or what usually turns out to be early dinner) turkey, roast veggies and greens. My family don't like Plum Pudding so I'm thinking about making a Pavlova. 14. That is a lot of crabs! Looks cold, too! Spending the holidays with my parents, so not sure of the menu. Your home looks warm and inviting. I admit that I love our Christmas lights throughout the house and would love to leave them out all year.
