Iced In, Knitting, Crocheting and Friends

Hello!  Thanks for stopping by!  We had another storm over the weekend.  It was FREEZING cold, 18 deg F, tiny icy snow blew all of Saturday, the kind that is so cold that it blows away.. well, it was also WINDY, our famous East Winds were blowing so hard it sounded like a freight train roaring by.. gusts as high as 86 mph here in Corbett and 107 mph at Vista House!!  So it didn't really accumulate as much as blow on by.  The hummingbird feeder kept freezing, so we'd bring it in and defrost it, but the little birds would fly up and look for the feeder, it was sad.  Here is one of the hardy little guys yesterday.

Does it look cold?  :-) I took this from inside as no way was I venturing out.

Dayle has been sprinkling birdseed on the deck for the wild birds and they really appreciate it.

I was supposed to attend a DAR meeting today but it was cancelled, I would not have been able to go even if it hadn't been.. our driveway is a sheet of ice and so are the roads.. my son slipped and fell 4 times this morning getting to his car to drive to work.. he made it okay, thank goodness.

There is a movement afoot.. you can read about it on my blog friend Meredith's post, click HERE.  There is a Women's March in Washington DC and similar ones all over the country.  Women are joining together to march to make it clear that we don't want to lose all the rights that have been gained over the last several decades.  I wish I could march but my knees wouldn't handle it, but my younger sister Denise is marching at the one here in Portland, I'm so proud of her!  But I can make a hat at least for myself to wear in support, so here is what I have so far.  My first effort looked awful along the bottom but Meredith told me I needed to learn to do a Knit Cast On, so I googled it, watched a video and unravelled all I'd done on the first one and started over.  This looks so much better!!

I also am crocheting some baby hats for "Operation Diaper Bag" for the Daughters of the American Revolution - they are putting together bags full of baby things for military families and I want to donate some hand crocheted hats to put in them.  If you want to help American military families, I would gladly accept a hat or two from you to put in them.  Let me know.  This is my pattern that I developed.  The Shell Hat.

I attended, between storms, an impromptu luncheon last week with a few of my friends.  As always we brought a few little gifts to share.

Each of us made something for the others and added in a few other things.  What a nice time we had of catching up with each other!

So, I have a nice day ahead of me working on a two different kinds of hats.. :-) What are you doing today?  ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  3. We have a few hearty hummers as well; I really don't know how they make it through this winter weather. I've been bringing in the feeder at night although forgot last night and it didn't freeze, thank goodness.
I have some friends who are marching in Portland, as well. I'm not able to do it but making some beaded safety pins with heart charms that will go to the march. I think there will be a great turn-out in DC and all around the country!
Keep warm and safe. It's still slippery everywhere. I'm heading to California tomorrow with a friend for an art retreat. Hoping it's a little warmer down there.

  5. Im hat knitting tonight! Fireman and I spent the day indoor painting. We have chosen two grays for the living areas of the house. We picked the colors around the stones in the fireplace. I cant believe you get hummies in the cold. Poor things!

  6. Hi Teresa. It looks jolly cold there! We have much colder weather and snow forecast at end of week. Today I stopped in. Tidied a kitchen cupboard ( stuff put back all over the place over Christmas) then I did some crafting. Tonight I've been knitting a hat and then started a cardigan - for Charity. Hugs Anne x

  8. So glad you are warm and cozy and that Travis is ok after all those falls! Your stitching projects are pretty! I started a little hat for baby Sebastian last night. I took 181st out to the airport mid afternoon to pick up Lis and Gary and had no trouble although there was slush here and there and still ice on some trees and some broken branches. Our yard and driveway are slushy ice. Wintery! xx

  9. Goodness it's turning into a crazy winter isn't it? We got about 12 inches of snow last night and today so now have close to 4 foot in our front yard! Tomorrow night is supposed to begin another string of below zero nights for us. I am so ready for spring. I'm glad to see that you're feeding the hummingbirds. I haven't seen any around here for a months. I think it's just plain too cold. The only birds I've seen are crows/ravens and a few sparrows and some very puffed up robins in our trees. Luckily the trees are loaded with berries this year for the birds to eat. I'm glad you had a good time at your luncheon. Take care out there driving.
    Blessings always,
    Betsy

  11. Uh oh .. still looks cold Teresa !! What a sweet little bird and so nice of you to leave feed out for him and his mates. We currently have a Sulphur Crested Cockatoo who visits us every day for food. There wasn't any in the feeder yesterday and I found him sitting on the back of one of the chairs at our table by the barbecue. No seed there so he helped himself to a sealed bag of it that was in shelving right next to our back door. There was seed everywhere - they aren't the tidiest of birds. Today when we got home, he got the sunflower seed bag, broke it open and had seeds all over the back again. Looks like we have a new pet. I like the look of your shell beanie - is there a pattern? I love how you and your friends take little gifts along for each other when you meet up. Such a lovely thing to do. Stay warm. xox

  13. I don't envy you that awful cold wind and ice. Apparently we are forecast snow and winter conditions from Thursday coming over from Canada, we shall see. It certainly looked like some wonderful gifts were exchanged with your luncheon, a real delight to see. Good luck with your hats. Stay warm and safe.

  15. Getting ready for our third installment of this year's willamette valley winter. I have two weather apps on my phone: Yahoo weather which has pretty gif photos of what's going on outside but not terribly accurate and my other - WeatherUnderground which has a station here in Canbyland. Yahoo says 50% chance of snow tonight with 38' temps. WU says it will be snowing from midnight to 3pm tomorrow and closer to 33'. I wonder who will be correct.
I may be done with 12 hr work days - maybe. will find out after lunch if coworker shows up. I am hoping to have some daylight time away from work to play my other life.
Loving your Junko's - they are super cute with their black hoods.

  16. It sure looks cold in your part of the world. I love snow but there is never much of it here in Scotland. I see you are making a pink hat in support of the women's march, fantastic! I read about it on Merediths blog. I won't be knitting one but will think of all the women marching, it is such an important cause. Oh how I like the sound of your luncheon! I must introduce my friends to the concept.

  17. Just got an email from a yarn shop in Kennewick saying they were closed due to the weather; it's finally warmer here and the snow is gone, but DH and I are still home nursing colds. Thos GK germs are powerful! Stay warm and safe! Love your crocheted hat; great color and cause.
