More Lace Edge and Kitchen Queen

Hi there!  I've added more rows of the lace edging on my shawl.. I have to say.. this is so much fun to work on!  There are 15 rows of lace and I just finished row 11 - 4 more and I'm done! So on Monday I can show you the finished shawl.

I have to say, I think everyone would love to wear a shawl with your favorite pastel brights!  It makes me feel so happy!  I already used it when we went to lunch at the Red Lobster, it was chilly in there and I had it on the whole time.  You do each row starting at the same side so you can wear it before it's done.  LOL!

It's also a fun challenge to learn new stitches used in the lace.

I was asked which colors of MoYa cotton yarn I am using - it's Cherry, Lagoon, Watermelon (main color), Coral, Shiraz, Canary and Pear.  I also added a truer green from my stash of KnitPicks cotton as the Pear green I got was very close to the yellow Canary.

I follow a Facebook group called "Dusty Old Thing" and they did a post on Hoosier cabinets, also known as Kitchen Queens.  I have the one my grandmother Shaklee used while raising her 6 kids (5 boys and 1 girl).  I saw in their post how many people have one or wish they had one and the ones with original canisters and such.  I have a book on Hoosiers and have identified mine as a Boone cabinet.  So, I got the wild hair to check eBay and see if they had any of the Boone sugar canisters and look.. they did!!  And now it's here!  My cabinet has the original flour sifter.  I'll take some photos of the cabinet with this in it soon and share with you.

Another "found object".. :-)... my friend Shirley had found a butter dish when they were antiquing and she showed it to me a few years ago.. I fell in love with it and had occasionally checked eBay and Etsy for one... and finally found one for a fair price!  It arrived yesterday.  It's Vaseline glass.  The top is embossed with "Butter Cover".. isn't that a hoot?

I just adore the green of this glass.

The bottom is embossed with "Bottom".  LOL!

Isn't this a fun piece?

Now we won't have any trouble knowing which side is up or down.  :-)

Our son Travis made homemade Mac and Cheese and Peas for our dinner last night.  It's so good!  The 6 of us polished it off.  It's a favorite of ours so I thought I'd share the recipe.

MAMA TERESA'S HOMEMADE MACARONI AND CHEESE WITH PEAS
(NOTE: THIS RECIPE IS DOUBLED FOR A BIG GROUP, FOR A SMALLER GROUP, CUT THIS IN HALF TO FEED 6.

Preheat oven at 350 degrees

24 oz macaroni
6 TBS Butter
5 TBS Flour
1/2 tsp salt
Pepper to taste
4 Cups milk
1 1/2 lbs Velveeta
1 Can baby peas, drained
Sliced Tillamook Cheddar for the top

Bring the water to boiling - like 3 quarts, with 2 tsp of salt and with a dash of oil.

While it's coming to a boil, melt butter in saucepan and add flour and salt - stir until blended and cook for a minute or two, then add the milk and stir until slightly thickened - it won't thicken much.  Turn off heat but leave pan on burner.  Add sliced Velveeta and stir until blended, add drained peas and stir in.  When the water comes to a boil you add the pasta and stir often - check OFTEN to see if the pasta is done "al dente" which means done but chewy, (never ever overcook pasta, it turns to mush and is horrible).  When the pasta is cooked, drain in a colander.  Toss till well drained, then add to cheese mixture in a oven proof baking pot - sprinkle with pepper and stir.  Then lay cheddar slices over the top.

Bake for a half hour or up to 3 quarters of an hour until slightly browned on top and bubbly.

((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  1. I love the colors in your shawl. They are so bright and festive! I crochet also but I haven't tried to do a shawl yet. I do a lot of amigurumi, blankets, hats and scarves. The mac and cheese looks good but I would have to eliminate the peas. I have never like them!

  3. I love visiting you, Teresa ๐Ÿ’ž Your shawl is sooooo beautiful! I am down to the last four rows of my shawl! Yay! It is really neat that you have found some more pieces for your Kitchen Queen! Your photos are all lovely, and I am sure your recipe is yummy. I recently found a gluten and dairy free boxed macaroni and cheese. Dare I believe the ad that it will taste as good as the the kind with gluten and dairy? ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿค—๐Ÿ˜˜๐Ÿ’ž๐ŸŒบ๐Ÿ’ž

  4. I always love hearing about your 'finds' on eBay etc. What an interesting butter dish! I prefer the taste of butter to margarine but don't like how its so hard straight out of the fridge so I use a butter dish and leave it on the bench. I have a very old butter dish that belonged to my grandmother. Its a Sandland & Lancaster - made in England. I'll take a pic and put it on my blog for you to see. Your shawl is coming along nicely -very colourful. I want to see a pic of you modelling it please. Mmmm - mac and cheese looks yummy. Will certainly give this a go soon. Have a good weekend. Xox

  5. The shawl is stunning, such a beautiful colour combination. Love the butter dish, a great find. I have a little confession to make I have never had mac and cheese...I am thinking I will give the recipe a try when some of the family visit shortly.

  7. I could dive into that mac and cheese right now, I am starving! Your shawl is brilliant! I am in total love with it. I went out and bought six colors for my edging, I did not like what I had at home. I can't wait to start but have to finish my other one first. Hugs to you dear Teresa.

  8. Your shawl is colorful and gorgeous. No one would ever guess it's not already finished. HA! Glad to hear you are already getting use out of it. I tell you, everything that was made before plastic hit the market is just so much nicer and definitely was a whole lot better for the environment.

  9. I was a little worried about all of that pink in the shawl but now that you've crocheted several rows of lacey edgings to tone it down, it's gorgeous. Happy 4th!
