Barley Twist and Paint Progress

Do you have a collection?  If so.. what is it?  Please share!  I have.. a few.. :-D  Candlesticks.. check.  My daughter Amy sent me the tall barley twist candles a few years ago and I adore them.  I recently saw a photo in one of my Country Living magazines of a table with several different barley twist candlesticks on it and of course I thought.. wouldn't my table look nice with a few more?  Off to eBay and Etsy.. look look.. ooh.. ahh.. bingo, a set of very reasonable price.  They were obviously antique, dirty and dry and a big bunged up.  They arrived yesterday and I set to cleaning one and rubbing it with Howard's Feed-N-Wax made with beeswax, carnauba wax and orange oil.  After cleaning one I thought I'd show you a before and after.

The wood before.. dry and scratched up.

It was so neat to see the wood soak up the oil and wax and shine.. the grain of the wood shone.

Before..

After.

Here is what I used on my candlesticks, I also use it for my wood spinning wheels and other wood pieces of furniture.

The painting project continues, this is the front porch.  Our son's friend, who is helping us paint, brought his girlfriend yesterday so 4 of them were working on the house.

I am working on a writing project - my memories of the beginnings of the Friends of Vista House.  I was given a box of old reports I did in the beginning of the project and on the cover of one I did this drawing.  I was happy to have it back and scanned it.  It was fun to see it again.

The pool is open!  I swam on Wednesday and will head back there today.  It felt good to get back into "the swim of things".  :-)  I'm sure my heart will thank me for the exercise.

I would like to thank you all for your support when I told the story of the man who was threatening to me.  I am okay, but when someone tells you you should be killed.. it does stick in your mind.  But I will not let the poison from that man lessen my fervor to RESIST when I see things happening in our country that will harm the old, the infirm, the poor, the sick and the children.  I will continue to speak out and to do my best to stand up for those who need my support.

What are you up to today?  ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  1. Fun things today Teresa! Your new candle sticks are beautiful. That oil sure spiffed them right up didn't it? Your farm house is looking so pretty with its new dress of color, and how fun to get that old drawing back that you made so long ago. Lots of good things happening. Have fun swimming! I'm sitting in my recliner at the lake enjoying the nice cool breeze coming through the windows.
    Blessings always, Betsy

  3. Thanks for the product recommendation. The wood looks beautiful after you treated it! The porch painting looks great. Your artwork is a joy to see, Teresa. Thanks for sharing your vista house sketch with us. We spent more time at Crazy Horse today and are so impressed with what has been completed of the mountain carving. The vision of honoring all Native Americans by completing the mountain carving the Native American leaders asked for long ago, featuring wonderful pieces of their artwork, and establishing a medical colleges are big goals! Happy weekend xx :)

  4. Swimming in a pool sounds so refreshing to me right about now....it's very, very warm here. I will have to try that wood product. It really polished up your candle sticks beautifully. I like to keep my wheels looking good. I applaud you and join with you in speaking out and resisting what's happening in the country right now!
