Rivers, Generosity & Waxed Linen

Yesterday I met my 2 sisters Roberta and Denise and sister/friend Shirley for lunch at Olive Garden.  It's always fun to hear how everyone is doing, our kids, husbands and grandkids.  A few days ago Shirley texted me that she was going to sell some of her collection of Depression glass, and at my request she sent me a photo of the things she was selling.  I asked her how much the 4 little Vaseline glass custard cups were and she responded, "For you, fiddy cents!"  I said, sold!  She brought them to me yesterday all wrapped in green tissue in a bag.  I asked her what I owed her and she gave them to me.  How generous was that?  I'm in love with these glowing sweet cups - we use them for sauces and dips.  Thank you, Shirley!!

You can't really tell from the photos, but they are quite small, holding maybe half a cup.  I do believe people ate much smaller portions in days of yore.

Did you know that if you put Vaseline glass under a black light that it glows a fluorescent green?  They add uranium to it to give it this color.

Do you have any Vaseline glass?

On my way home from lunch, my route takes me alongside the Sandy River.  I really enjoy that I live in the countryside and this is my roadside view.  I also love that Corbett is only 22 miles via I-84 freeway to downtown Portland, Oregon!  Portland is a perfect city from my standpoint - it only has a population of 600,000, it's beautiful, built across the Willamette River with several bridges, it has an opera house, a major zoo, and I can get there in 20 minutes.

These are all alder trees - they aren't big on autumn color.  :-)  You can see the blackberries on the shore.. they are an invasive species in Oregon.

The river is running clear and cold.

I was looking for some embroidery scissors that I saw on another blog.. I'm in love with them.. but they are very expensive.. Sajou mother-of-pearl ones.. and I was looking on Etsy at them and found these wonderful spools of waxed linen thread in these cool plastic cases.. and they weren't exorbitant so I bought them.  I love using waxed threads!

I am looking forward to using this thread on a project.

Do you have any waxed thread for hand-sewing?

I'm off to swim in a few hours.  I have good news!  I've lost 50 lbs!  We are eating pretty normal food, just a bit less and I've cut out fried food when I eat in restaurants, ordering fresh healthy things instead - and I swim for an hour without stopping 3 times a week.  I actually thought the scale was broken, but Dayle said he weighed and had gained a few lbs.  :-)  How is your week going?  ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  1. Well done with your weight loss Teresa, what an achievement, your health will thank you for it ;0) Lovely autumnal photos from the river bank. We're just off to our dance class, it's Samba tonight! x

  2. Congrats on your weight loss! That's fantastic, Teresa. I have some waxed thread but I haven't used it very much. I will have to try to do that more often. Your cups are so pretty. I have some fake Vaseline glass! They're little nesting bowls that I use for measuring out ingredients while baking. There were four of them but then my husband dropped one on the quarry-tile kitchen floor...sigh. If you're ever in New Mexico, you might enjoy the Bradbury Science Museum in Los Alamos; you can see an exhibit about the old "radioactive" red Fiestaware dishes, which also relied on uranium for their coloration.

  4. I grew up with my grandmother, mother and aunts collective depression glass. Not fun being dragged through a depression glass show as a kid but now I would love to go now. You are so lucky to have such beautiful pieces of history.

  5. Congrats on your weight loss:))
I have a small collection of old sewing tools and some newer reproduction ones. The older ones I picked up 20 years ago when they were cheap, which is not the case anymore. I love Sajou but my pocketbook doesn't:))

  6. Congrats on your weight loss Teresa! That's very impressive, cause it's so hard to be consistent these days. Hip Hip Hurray! Love your vaseline jars, I honestly never heard of them before, but I sure like them. Also not sure what waxed thread is for except for using for strength?! Can't wait to see what you're up to!!!
    Love your beautiful photos, xoRobin

I know just how hard it can be at times to shed those lb's

I didn't know about the Uranium in the Vaseline glass items. Gee, at 63 I've learned something new (smile).

  9. Good for you on the weight loss. I am at a standstill. I loose 5 pounds, and put it back on. I guess that would be the yo-yo diet, lol. Now the holidays are coming and I plan to fix a Thanksgiving meal. Hard telling what everyone's schedule is, but if I have to sit here and eat by myself, then so be it. Uranium, hummm, isn't that what they use for atom bombs? I have 1 green Depression glass bowl and I have washed it in the dishwasher and I think I shouldn't have done that. Back in the day, they washed everything by hand, we all know that. Love your scenery pics, I always do. I am pretty sick of dried up corn and soy bean fields. It was cool, rainy and just plain old BLAH. We are having quite a few of them days lately.

  12. That's great news on the weight loss!!! Wonderful! Shirley is so sweet to gift you with that pretty Vaseline glass. She knows you well. :-) I, too, love Portland, but not it's freeways! I like the back roads around there the best. I'll be seeing you when I return from the Far East!

  13. So glad you are having happy days, Teresa, getting rid of unwanted pounds, and gaining more beautiful views of the world around you! I'm glad you had good visits with family and a special friend. Shirley's gift of Vaseline glass is lovely! I don't have any but I have some very old red, blue and gold glasses that you might be able to tell me about :) I like your cool looking containers of waxed thread and I don't have any. I have started a fall embroidery piece and done a little more crochet on my Ruby shawl. I ran errands yesterday, but did not get any photos of the pretty colors around me :( I could not sleep last night :( We have two out of state guests for two weeks and they are pitching in to help with the girls. Some of the family are fighting off colds, and yesterday we offered temporary emergency housing starting Saturday night, to a couple who need it, so things are in a bit of a uproar around here :) Tomorrow morning I'm supposed to help facilitate discussion in a women's group at church so I hope I can sleep tonight! I'm looking forward to our next visit !

You live in a beautiful place, stunning nature is around, I like such kind of landscape.

  15. Congratulations on your weight loss Teresa :) As always, I've enjoyed reading your blog post and especially seeing the photos of your lovely countryside. I really should remember to take my camera with me when I'm out and about in case I spot something worth snapping.

  16. Hi Teresa .. Those little green cups are very pretty (and cute) but I'm wondering why they're called Vaseline cups? Here in Australia, Vaseline is a petroleum jelly used for skin care. We also put it on the Pug's nose when it looks dry - keeps it lovely and black and moist. I'm a bit early, but have a good weekend !! xox

  18. Good job on your weight loss! Congratuation!
Those vasoline glass pieces are so pretty! I only have a couple of pieces. But the colors are so pretty.
I love your scenery. I was in Portland years ago (almost 30!) and loved it. A friends brother gave us a walking tour. At that time there were a lot of coffee shops. We didn't see a lot of bars. But that might just be the areas he took us to.
Those waxed thread holders are beautiful! I love old fashioned looking things.

  19. Wow, Teresa! 50 lbs is huge! Congrats. Glad it hasn't been a struggle and you still get to eat! I don't have any Vaseline glass or waxed thread. I thought waxes thread was dental floss. Ha-ha.
