Shhhh.. don't tell Kristi.. but I ordered some yarn. From Webs.com. I've been looking for months for some yarn to make a winter shawl. I tried to find a variegated yarn in red, white and green - no luck. Then a variegated one in shades of red - no luck. I finally found a deep blood red in 50% Alpaca 50% Silk. While I was shopping I took a gander at their cotton and decided to try 3 skeins. I'm very happy with the look and feel of the cotton! I have an idea to make something with this that looks like little rows of flowers..
A close up of the cotton.. the off white is organic cotton!
Here is the red -- I was somewhat surprised at how skinny the skeins are. I don't think I'll get far on a shawl with this lot. I'm not sure how to proceed! These might just make a hat or fingerless gloves. What to do? The skeins are 50 grams! 146 yards. Meredith, help, how many skeins of this would I have to use to make a shawl like those you've made?
See how skinny they are compared to the cotton skeins?
But man oh man.. you should feel this stuff.. !
My roses are opening up and are swooningly gorgeous!!
They seem to be enjoying the sun, too.
The red rose up above was taken with my Lumix camera - this one was taken with my iPhone 5S!
Yes, the sun is back and it's windy like crazy! They have clocked wind gusts at Vista House at 115 mph! It's down to 90 mph gusts today. I thought I'd show you a fused glass plate I made.. and the tiny clay chickens in front of it are part of a gift from my blog friend Taci. I painted the little log cabin years ago.
OK, I must pack my swim bag and get going, I'm meeting Gracie for lunch at Red Robin before we do our swim workout at the gym. I hope you have a WONDERFUL weekend!! ((hugs)), Teresa :-)
Oh my goodness I am truly lusting over your yarn right now! I am looking forward to seeing what you make with it! Yum...yep, that yarn is yummy!
ReplyDeleteYour roses are beautiful. You are so lucky to be able to have roses right now...everything in my yard has a layer of snow and ice. But I will live vicariously though your lovely photos and enjoy the beauty of your roses. :)
Blessings always
I'm sure you must need the yarn! Enjoy the weekend too x
ReplyDeleteGorgeous yarns and roses! My mother-in-law is a weaver and buys a lot of her fibers from WEBS. When she's in NZ at her other home, we collect her mail and I love reading all her fiber magazines and catalogs. They really sell beautiful stuff.
ReplyDeleteThose are gorgeous colors! I don't knit or crochet so I am no help with how much you will need. But the sceines sure don't look all that big. They look so soft!
ReplyDeleteThe roses are beautiful! That wind hasn't hurt them any? That is a strong wind.
Hi Teresa, I think you need to order one more skein of the red. It takes a minimum of 450 yards, and that isn't all that wide. If you ordered one more you would have a total of 584 yards and that would be perfect. The yarn I used was thin, so that is perfect, you would use a larger hook, at least an I or J which sounds crazy but it works. See if you can order another one in the same dye lot.
ReplyDeleteGood luck,
Meredith
Hi Dear Teresa, The roses are really opening up nicely! I love that, don't love when they never open up! (had some of those) Great yarns, I'm sure Meredith will have some suggestions she is the shawl "Queen". To cold here for swimming, or maybe I'm a wimp, but it is negative degrees.
ReplyDeleteHave a nice weekend and stay warm, xoRobin
That yarn is to die for! Wish I was more yarn talented! I can crochet a basic stitch….same with knitting.
ReplyDeleteThat yarn does look soft and cozy Teresa! Whatever you make, it will be beautiful, I am sure! Hope you girls had a good lunch and workout.
ReplyDeleteI too, got a big lot of yummy yarn today. Although, I didn't order it, or ever select it myself!
XO Kris
I love your silky yarn! I think your posts are making me want to swim in Chicago. I cut my hair super short today so that would make swimming hair really easy!
ReplyDeleteOh, that red yarn looks so dreamy and soft. "Alpaca" and "silk" are magic words ... :)
ReplyDeleteYour other yarns look so cheerful and springy - and so do those roses! But I can't believe how windy it is there. Hope you had a great swim date with Gracie.
Because you brought attention to the two rose photos taken with two different cameras, I flipped back and forth a zillion times between the two trying to note the differences [well maybe not a zillion times, but it seemed like a lot :) ] My conclusion: I like them both, but I am especially fond of the pink rose, and the mass of roses together in the other photos. Thanks for sharing the photo bouquet, Teresa!
ReplyDeleteI love, love, love your new yarn Teresa. It looks so soft and squishy and yummy. Hide it from Kristi f need be. :-) Your roses are beautiful and so springy. I'm very ready for spring.
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Betsy
Good Day Teresa, Wow what beautiful, glorious roses. They made me smile when I saw them.. Beautiful Alpaca Silk Yarn. I am sure it will make into the most gorgeous shawl. How wonderful that Gracie is now swimming with you.. I wish I could join you all too. Hugs Judy
ReplyDeleteThat yarn is beautiful! Those will be bright, cheerful colours to knit through the remainder of these dark winter months. I think that is one of the reasons I like knitting Fair Isle in the winter. All those colours cheer me up when the weather is grey and the days are short. If you type your yardage and yarn weight in the search engine on Ravelry and also put shawls in the search engine it should bring up all the patterns you have enough yarn to knit. Have fun choosing!
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh....your new yarn is GORGEOUS! I can't wait to see what you make with it! :-)
ReplyDeleteThose yarn colors are fantastic and I can't wait to see what you come up with! It will be beautiful. We'll all be jealous! I love that glass plate you made, you'll have to elaborate on that one day. I have some alpaca yarn I bought from my friend who raises alpacas, I'm knitting a couple of hats for the soliders with it. It is so soft!
ReplyDeleteThe fused glass is wonderful, clever you. I love the yarn as well, I shall look forward to seeing your shawl.
ReplyDeleteJust look at all that luscious yarn! I'm spinning for an alpaca farm near me so I know first hand just how wonderful it feels! And combined with silk would only make it that much dreamier. That will make a wonderful shawl Love that ruby red color too!
ReplyDeleteSuch a colourful post Teresa, love it!
ReplyDeleteI always find it strange how yarns of the same material and weight can be either fatter or thinner than each other....
Cant wait to see what you make with your new purchase, and no, I wont tell Kristi, your secret is safe with me ;)
Helenxx
oooooh that yarn looks yummy.
ReplyDeleteYour yarn looks scrummy and such lovely colours x
ReplyDeleteYour chunkier yarn looks so soft, little flowers would be really cute :-) You could look on Ravelry to see about using the thinner yarn?
ReplyDeleteSuch beautiful yarn, I look forward to seeing what you make! The idea of little flowers is lovely! Wishing you a wonderful week, Teresa.
ReplyDeleteHelen xx
Sigh....flowers and yarn....life could not get any better my friend....hugs and happy new week. xoxo
ReplyDeleteYour yarn is just beautiful. Can't wait to see what you make. Webs is my favorite yarn store, and I am so fortunate that we live only about an hour away from it. It is a beautiful drive to Northampton, and the store is just wonderful.
