Upgrading the Old Bag

I've been using the same purse for several years and I've loved it.  It is a Pendleton blanket one that is small and cross body and it's been wonderful.  It was little and easy to carry.  Then I got new glasses and the lady who fitted me insisted I use the hard case for them.  Now my little purse was not working for me.. I needed a slightly bigger bag.  I wasn't even looking for one when I got a new catalog and I spied this beauty and birds began to sing and the light got brighter and I fell in love with it. After much deliberation and discussion with my other half, the decision was made and I hit the "buy" button and began the wait.  It arrived yesterday and I transferred my things into and am thrilled with how everything fits.  :-)

As a lifelong "hippie chick", I love the fringe and the beading on this!  The entire strap is beaded which I love.

I adore the amount of turquoise beads use on the strap and the front of the bag.

How long do you use a purse before you want another one?  What kind is your favorite?  Little or big.. or medium sized?  Do you call it a purse or a bag - or what? Would you ever have such a wild bag as this?  :-)

The detail on the front, there are even copper colored sequins in the design.  I look forward to using this.  :-)

My younger sister Denise and I both needed to visit our jeweler to have some repairs done on some of our jewelry so we met for lunch at a little Italian restaurant in downtown Gresham before we went to GoldArt.  She was wearing a bracelet that she got in Africa and I admired it so took some photos of it.  This would be fun to make, wouldn't it?

They call this a "lazy squaw" stitch where you put on several beads at once before you sew through the leather.

They have a lunch special at this place which I love, you get to pick what pasta, sauce, met and veg you want.  I chose farfalle pasta, alfredo sauce, salmon chunks, mushrooms and asparagus spears with fresh grated Parmesan on top.  NUM!

The jeweler's wife was wearing this necklace which I was amazed by.. it's different sized and colored South Sea pearls.. separated by.. get this.. black diamond beads!  OH MY.. you should have seen the sparkles in real life.

I'm off to swim in a while.. what are your plans for the day?  I hope it's a good one and have a great weekend!!   ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  1. I absolutely love bags. I am with bags as others are with shoes. Love them. It's the possibilities for packing up your life and taking off I think. Your new bag is gorgeous. I'm a bit of a hippy as well and I love the fringe. Here, a purse is the small thing inside the bag with the money in it. I usually end up with a big bag. I emptied mine the other day, quite shocking the amount of stuff in it. Always a notebook, pen, book and camera. In fact I found four pens and four lipsalves as well. I am duly ashamed. CJ xx

  2. I use the same bag for years but recently bought a new one I am in love with. It actually has a smaller bag inside you can clip out and use as needed. I bought it at an Art Show and am so happy I did. Before that I used the same bag for about 8 years and I was still getting compliments on it. Your new bag is perfect for you, so glad you treated yourself.

  3. I tend to use a purse for years and go for utilitarian (boring) brown or black to match my favorite shoes. My current black leather one can accommodate my iPad (barely) but I want to upgrade to a leather slightly larger messenger bag style $$$! The beadwork on your new bag is amazing! I am glad you found it and that you and Denise had a good outing! Happy Weekend! Today is Tim's birthday and we plan to celebrate it on Sunday...maybe see you Monday for swimming? XX

  4. Something interesting happened when I was reading your blog. I'm reading and looking at each photo and when I get to the photo of the jeweler's wife I noticed the faint scar on her neck. I know exactly why that scar is there as I have very recently (July 26th)undergone the same surgery. I had my entire thyroid removed plus 20 lymph nodes removed because of cancer. Anyway the necklace is beautiful and her scar looks great (hope mine will too in the coming years).
To answer your questions: I prefer a small cross body purse. I rotate purses as the seasons change. And no I don't think I could pull off a bag like yours. (smile)

  6. I love purses and currently I'm using a purple one but it's heavy but I adore purple. I've gotten into the Baggalini purses. So many pockets, lightweight and washable. I've got a tan one but I'd like a purple one if I can find it in size I want. Your new purse is lovely! Headed to Oktoberfest.

  7. I like small purses. Otherwise, I'm a packrat. Small keeps me out of trouble (Or the U-Haul store).
My current one is about 10 years old and was a super find at a rummage sale. It's a Ness Bag made with Harris tweed. Probably someone bought it as a souvenir in Scotland. In any case, it was a $100 bag in the catalog that I scored for one dollar.
Most people around here know their pendleton so I'm unlikely to score a pendleton purse. I'll have to make one.
Hey - Flock & Fiber is Next weekend (23rd). Let me know if you're headed my way.

  9. I don't have very many purses, but I prefer a larger one that I can tuck my knitting into. However, since I hurt my back I'm not allowed to use those anymore. I tend to keep the same purse for years and years when I find one I like. Your new purse looks perfect for you.
I recognize that dish that you're eating. Except for the salmon is the same thing I order one when we eat there for lunch. We'll have to do that again soon. I hope you had a good time swimming. Have a lovely weekend Teresa.
    Blessings, Betsy

  10. Your new bag is lovely; I love the beading. For me, handbags are my downfall and I have too many. I got hooked on buying so called name brands which is not a good thing. The beaded bracelet is such an interesting design. I have a bead loom that must be fifty years old. Maybe I'll try beading as a new hobby. I hope your forest fire situation is improving. Hugs, Pat

  11. I'm a bit of a 'bag-a-holic' and have many gorgeous bags on the two top shelves of my built-in wardrobe. However, I don't swap them around much as its such an effort to transfer everything and to remember where everything is. At the moment I'm using a Hedgren bag which is awesome - very light and really smart looking. I hope you enjoy your new bag - sounds like you will!! How about that lady's necklace? Wow I'd love something like that. Your sister's bracelet reminded me of one I half made many moons ago when I did a beading course. Haven't done any beading for a few years now, the last things being pretty things you can hang up. I have my two in my craft room. I was planning to get some of the books ready for audit (as Hon.Treasurer of our Country Womens Association branch) .. but as usual have just fooled around all day - playing with my little grandson, crocheting, eating, crocheting. You know what its like. Hope you enjoy your weekend. xox

  12. I use my bags until they fall apart. At the moment I use a small fabric bag, green with flowers on. Most days however I use my laptop bag, which is not pretty. I love your bag, it is funky! xx

  13. I am very much a bag girl. Usually have abiggish one as I'm still at the "Mum will you carry my phone/iPad/notepad/pens/coat/water bottle stage. Live the beading in the bag and the bracelet, interested in giving that a try, not sure I have the patience though!

  14. I'd take that bag in a heartbeat Teresa! LOVE everything about it
I tend to change bags seasonally. I am into a sling bag . Just one shoulder strap type with lots of pockets.

  15. I have one purse at a time that I use until it is ready to fall apart! I used to go for the practical, one-color purse that would fit my essentials (wallet, glasses, lipstick, phone/camera). More recently, I have purchased a colorful, hand-made purse that supports a worthy cause - such as my last purchase at the juried Dayton Institute of Arts Oktoberfest fundraiser. I love the beading on your new bag, but I am not sure I could swing the fringe! Today was a lazy day - sweet - tomorrow we go hiking before the rain arrives - there are four days of rain in the forecast (so happy about that!)

  17. That is an exciting and boldly designed bag Teresa! I have lots of different bags and swap them around every now and then....I have quite a few Cath Kidston ones. I call them 'bags' as over here a 'purse' is a small wallet to keep money in (inside your bag!!) Loved this post....have a great week! xox
