A Letter to a Friend

I'd like to thank the lovely folks who took the time to leave a comment on my last post.  Susan and Jane asked me if I used the box and pens and so I took the time this morning to write a letter in response to my friend Kathy who sent me a lovely hand-written note not long ago.  I tried several of my nibs and settled on the one in my sterling silver pen which is a reproduction of Shakespeare's pen.  I purchased it when I went to the Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, Oregon many years ago.  I also have a matching inkwell..

I must note that it is not that easy to use a very pointy dip pen as you can't write normally as when you try to move the pen up the tip digs into the papers surface... thusly my writing is not as fluid and nicely done as I'd like.

I didn't have an envelope at hand so I melted some sealing wax at the bottom of the letter to show you how it looks.  This one is a dove carrying an olive branch to signify peace.. something I wish would settle upon my countrymen and women.  And yours, too.

We give the dogs a teeth cleaning treat each day.  Do you think they look forward to this?  Yes they do!  Our son and grandson will get the keys to their new home in a few weeks and we'll be down to one dog again.  I'm happy for them to have their own place soon.  And we'll begin turning our two upstairs bedrooms into comfortable guest rooms.  It will be nice to re-decorate them.

I called my gym, the heating element has not been delivered or installed, so I will not be swimming today.  I hope it gets fixed soon!  So, I have a day to do whatever I like.. :-)  What are your plans?

((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  1. Calligraphy used to be one of my hobbies so I very much appreciate your writing box and it's contents. Your letter looks beautiful on that gorgeous paper.
Ha, ha....I wish my grandchildren were as eager to clean their teeth as much as the fur babies seem to be.
    Hugs-x-

  2. Your treasured box is wonderful, Teresa. As I've gotten older, my handwriting has really suffered. Yours still looks great!. The photo of the dogs waiting for their treat made me laugh. Hope your pool gets the element fixed soon.

  4. You have beautiful writing. I think I've mentioned before that my Mom used a fountain pen all of my growing up years but I never mastered using one.
Your house is going to be so quiet without Meeka and the guys. You went from a full, full house to just the two of you. That will be fun for you and Dayle.
I'm staying at the lake in the new trailer until Sunday! Yes, they delivered it on Monday. On Labor Day! was surprised they would do that but very happy. Dennis is driving back and forth to work and staying at the house once in a while. But I'm enjoying all of this space in my new home for this week at least. Next week I have appointments every day so I'll be back at home getting ready to go see Piper the next week.
Wishing you a wonderful Thursday Teresa. Hi to Dayle!
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  6. Your letter is lovely and I like the design of the wax seal, too. Great that the dogs enjoy their teeth cleaning treats 😃 and that the guys are making progress on their plans to move. Now if the pool will just get fixed! We saw an interesting show at a local planetarium today. XX

  7. I do love your writing box and all of your nibs and inkwells and sealing wax. I adore all things calligraphy, so it's lovely to see someone else's collection. I have my things in a little wooden box too. I really like the idea of sealing wax - they really knew how to write letters in the olden days, didn't they. It would be nice to have the time now. I hope you have a good day. CJ xx

  8. such lovely writing ;)...i was a keen penpal when i was younger, i loved writing and receiving letters, so much more comforting and precious than a email. i always remember waking and running down the stairs to see if a letter had arrived. with facebook, messenger and texting i find friends dont write so much now...i try do letters in cards at christmas with family updates, but i really should make more of an effort to write. I have a book about the letters Beatrix potter wrote with drawings and stories in...i think i was born in the wrong era! hehe ;)x

  9. I used to write with a "dipping pen" at school (too many years ago), when desks had inkwells and we were issued with a sheet of blotting paper! They're not easy pens to write with and there's always the danger of blots (drops of ink falling on the page). I love your writing box. it reminds me of my "cabinet of curiosities" - a display cabinet with all those little bits and pieces that you love but tend to end up just stuck in a drawer. I remember my Dad having a stick of sealing wax. As a child I thought it was a wax crayon, and wondered why I couldn't draw with it! The dogs obviously enjoy their treats and much easier than trying to brush their teeth! xx

  10. My Dad used to use a fountain pen all the time. I think my son might enjoy having one - he still writes letters to people! What a change in your household - from two sons, a DIL and 3 grandchildren plus an extra dog and soon just you and Dayle. The peace and quiet might be welcome and luckily everyone is close enough to see now and then. Hope your pool gets their heating element soon!

  14. Hand written notes are such a treasure. I fear they are becoming a lost art. Sealing wax too - I had some when I was a teen and college student. Your handwriting is lovely.
