Booties and Tiny Stitches

Knowing how to crochet baby booties is a valuable skill in life.  It is SO nice to be able to make a gift for a new baby with your own hands.  I have developed this pattern over the years and can make a pair of booties over the course of a few hours.  I actually wrote up the pattern to share but all the people who tried it couldn't figure it out so I must have done something really wrong.. :-)  So, I can't share the pattern - for your own good. LOL!
I snapped this photo an hour or so ago as I was working on the 2nd bootie.  Do you recognize the yarn bag?  I won that from Shari and it's been my constant companion ever since.  Thanks again, Shari!
I use all kinds of different things for the ties - crocheted ones, little thin satin ribbon, but I got the notion that this silk pinkie/purple-y ribbon would look lush on these.
From the side...
I used my little baby quilt as a back drop for the photos.. I had this made by a nice old lady in Louisiana whose name was "Granny Nell".  I was a newlywed and was babysitting some children and she was living with her daughter across the street and we became acquainted.  I confided in her that I was very unhappy in Louisiana and missed my home state of Oregon and my friends and family - my mom, dad and my sisters. She must have tired of my complaints and said this to me.. and I've never ever forgotten it.. she said "Bloom where you are planted".  What a wise woman.. and I tried to do that.
I was newly pregnant when I knew her and she made quilts to sell, so I ordered one for my baby.  For some reason I knew it would be a girl and ordered a pink "Sun Bonnet Sue & Overall Sam" design.  I want you to look at the fine stitches, each one is by hand, there is not a machine used in any of this.  Isn't it amazing?

I still have this quilt but I want my daughter Amy to have it one day as it's hers.
I have a CORRECTION on the New England Clam Chowder recipe.. I used 5 slices of bacon, not 10.. lol!  Hubby has been watching a football game, University of Oregon, the Ducks, won the game, 63 to 14.  Yay!  Now we're off to get a hamburger for lunch and do some grocery shopping.  If you have a Carl's Jr. in your town, you have got to try their new Memphis BBQ burger.  It's DELISH!  I hope you have a wonderful weekend!  ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  1. Oh Teresa you are so talented! I love these sweet little booties! My goodness they are cute.

The quilt is lovely. Hand quilts are really hard to find anymore. You have a really special quilt.

I love "Bloom where you are planted" I think I need to say that to myself a million times over, you see, I miss my home state of Florida so much it hurts sometimes. I will take the saying to heart and learn to bloom here in the hills and hollers...well, you know, try to anyway. :)

    Blessings always

  5. Very cute booties Teresa! And that baby quilt is a treasure! Such love went into those stitches! And oh so many hours. I can hear her telling you to "Bloom where you are planted" and I had to smile. Unless your daughter has a special interest in having that quilt, I would keep it, and eventually, one day, it will be hers. I find that my children just don't have the appreciation for hand made items that I do. That quilt should be with someone who will love and appreciate it.
Now, I am sure your burger is delicious, but....I have to say.....the Carl's Jr ads turn me OFF! They are so sexist, and I can't stand to see women objectified that way. I rarely, if ever go there, and it is because of their ads! Sorry.
    Hugs,
    Kris

  6. What an amazing quilt and a wonderful family heirloom. I enjoyed the story that went along with it too. Those little booties are gorgeous and using the wider ribbon looks great. Must keep that in mind - very pretty. Weekend nearly over here but it was a good one - nice warm weather at last, after a long cold winter. xoxox

  15. The booties are beautiful and the ribbon you used for the ties is a perfect touch for finishing them. Such talent in your two hands!

The quilt is stunning. Every stitch by hand! Oh my! It puts me to shame. I've made a few quilts and hand stitched the tops but machine stitched the pieces together. I can't imagine doing one all by hand. What a wise woman she also was to give you such good advice.

No baby for me in Portland yet!!! Soon I hope, (and so does the expectant mother.)

    Blessings,

    Betsy

  17. How lovely, I will think of that 'Bloom where you are planted'. I adore Sunbonnet Sue. You would pay through the nose now for a completely hand stitched quilt like that, what and heirloom. I think the booties are the cutest too, the colour is great and the ribbons. I would love to make them but I get easily confused with patterns. xxx
