Narcissus-ist

Are you over winter?  I am!  So, my poor home was looking so .. unadorned.. that when we went grocery shopping at Winco, I saw all these potted bulbs out front, shivering in the cold, and took pity on 3 pots and brought them home.  I washed up my glass .. not sure what it is, really.. vase?  And put a layer of polished agates in the bottom of the glass thing and watered the pots and put them in the vase.  My mom and stepfather found the agates on the beach and put in a rock tumbler.  They are gorgeous!  The Narcissus bloomed overnight, isn't that cool?

These little darlings are making me so happy!  I wanted to share them with you.

I also got a hyacinth, no idea what color it will be.. and a tiny iris.  I'm so excited to see what they'll look like.  I am supposed to let the soil dry to the touch before watering them again.  They were only like $2.48 USD each.

I wanted to gather some moss outside to put around them, but haven't gotten to that yet.  Oh honey.. ?

Pardon my rather wrinkly tablecloth.. it's 100% cotton and very hard to get it to lay flat.  But I don't mind, myself, although I once had a guest chastise me when they entered my home, saying "You didn't iron your tablecloth, tacky tacky!"  I've never forgotten that.  I wish I'd had the quick wit to tell her that what is tacky is telling your host that they are tacky.  LOL!!  But that would have been tacky of me, wouldn't it.  :-)

And so.. these little things are giving me hope that winter will soon go back to it's cave and spring will pop out like baby lambs in the field!

These old brass candlesticks have a story.. of course.. I had a 100 year old friend named Weltha Wilson who invited me to paint on Mondays with her and her friends.  When she finally needed to move into an assisted living facility, her family had an estate sale.  I bought these then, they'd always been in pride of place on her pump organ, which had two pretty little wooden round shelves on each side so the player would have light to play by.  They are all floral embossed and I treasure them, and remind me of Weltha.

Today is a treasured day at home.. no swimming.. no shopping.. no nuthin.  I do have to do some website work.. and I might do some kitchen clearing.. it's needed.  Don't ask.  The above view is what I see from my easy chair in the family room.  So, this is my favorite place to keep "pretty".  What is your favorite place to keep "pretty"?
((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  1. Ahh my favourite daffs Tesesa...enjoy your taste of spring. We still have terribly problems here with rain and your poor east coast looks dire. Keep snug x

  2. Those flowers are so pretty and you have a real artistic way of displaying them - beautiful! Life is so hectic these days and spending a day at home is always a treat. My DD2 (who, with her husband live here at home with me) is having this week off work so we are going out to lunch together today - looking forward to that though. Enjoy your rest. xox

  3. Hi Teresa. I am hearing almost everyone I know who is in colder climates, say how they are ready for Spring. For us, we have so little true winter, that I am never really ready. But I can sure understand how you would be. Your flowers must have given you a lift. I love bulbs. I need to get some soon. Hyacinth is a favorite of mine.
I was aghast to read that your "guest" made such a rude comment. Shame on her! I would love to be a guest in your home.
Enjoy your day of nuthin'! I am puttering slowly here. Thinking of doing some crochet. But still catching up on my blogging pals.
    Hugs,
    Kris

  5. I love the flowers on your table and the story about the candlesticks. It was near freezing last night here and a high of 42 today. With the cool, damp wind whipping around that is cold for us. Why do you always need to put gas in your car when it is really cold or raining? Anyway, I have been home getting lots of things organize. It is a bear to do but feels so good when it is done.
    hugs,
    Meredith

  6. Such a beautiful room, with all of those windows and all of that light. Wonderful. I love your big indoor plants as well, I'm a huge fan of house plants, they really make a room I think.

  7. Hey Teresa,

I love the idea of putting your little potted plants inside a large vase. I shall be copying that tomorrow!!

  8. The flowers are so pretty! I love the way you arranged the pots inside the big bowl, it's a really nice look. The houseguest was the tacky one! Sheesh. I really can't stand that. Last summer, I was puttering in my front yard when my neighbor came out. I complimented him on some butterfly bushes he'd had professionally planted in his yard earlier that day (he never does his own yard work, always hires somebody to do it). He replied by asking whether we'd "ever considered" doing some work in our yard! What the heck? I was "doing some work" as he asked me! I guess I know what he thinks about my yard, then. Haha. Oh, well. Guess what, I have candlesticks in almost the exact same shade of green on my dining room table right now too. :)

  9. Very pretty Teresa and a lovely cheerful reminder hat Spring will surely arrive at some point that's if we don't disappear under the sea. Lots more rain forecast. We are fortunate where we live - in the middle and fairly high up - feel so sorry for those who are flooded and facing yet more. I try and keep kitchen tidy and pretty because it's at the centre of my home. We eat in there as well when there are no visitors and have to pass through to my utility room/ outside and dining room where I craft.

It was the beginning of a journal that I am on working on - nothing to do with cards at the moment :-) trying to get back into those. Anne x

  10. With two teenagers at home, it can be an ordeal just to keep things picked up! lol But, our old parlor room in our farmhouse is just for reading and that usually stays so nice:)

  11. The flowers are so pretty and springy! It is so cold here that I don't even know if flowers could survive indoors. But I wish I could have some. I hate how bare the house looks when we take down the Christmas decorations!

  13. I'm with you Teresa. Spring can come anytime. I'm over winter. Completely. I shoveled about 4 inches of snow just before dinner and it needs done again already. I'm still having blogging issues and thinking of going to best Buy tomorrow and see if someone there can help me.
And I am so shocked anyone would be so rude to you about your table cloth. Your home is lovely, and who cares if a tablecloth is wrinkled? You and Dayle are fantastic hosts and your home could be a tiny, tiny place and the warmth and welcome would still be felt. I'm sorry for that person.
    (Your flowers are lovely.)
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  14. So glad you posted! I love seeing your bulb arrangement. It really is beautiful and encouraging. I love it when you tell some of the stories of why you treasure the things you have around you. The outrageous comment of your guest caused me to shake my head in disgust. I guess the main area I try to keep pretty is my sea chest, followed by the mantel, and the table beside my favorite chair :) xx
PS I rescued my two little plants from their foil wrappers today as you suggested.

  16. I like your idea of sending winter to it's cave! Love your flowers too. I really must get some flowers for the house just as soon as this deep freeze passes. They just brighten up the room.

  17. People should be glad to invited into other's homes, I really feel that very strongly! You little bulbs are lovely, just the splash of spring colour you needed to warm the heart.

  18. That's a lovely arrangement. It's surprising how something as small and inexpensive as a pot of daffodils or narcissi can brighten up the day, isn't it.

  19. I love how you arranged your bulbs in the large glass vase! The daffodils look so pretty! We have been snowed in since Sunday here in eastern IL...I'm hoping to get out this afternoon!

  20. Love it! I really need some color! It is actually at 0 degrees here today. After the last few nights of below 0 temps and wind chill down to -50 below, 0 sounds great! Add on a bright blue sky today...heaven. I can feel the mood elevating minute by minute! Your pretty pictures are even making the mood meter go up faster! I wish I had all those windows.

  21. I so want some of those flowers! I have been looking around to buy some but have not found any in my local supermarket as yet, and haven't had time to go to the florist. Perhaps at the weekend!

  24. I'm always amazed at JUST HOW STARVED for color I become during the winter months! I see you are the same! Those sweet bulb blossoms are always such a welcome injection of hope/color in an otherwise drab world! I typically get Amaryllis at Christmas - didn't do it this year...so we are still colorless! And I am OVER IT! I need some colorful yarny project to satisfy my need for color! Ohhhh, hyacinths...how I LOVE their wild crazy perfume! I was at the market a few days ago, just standing in the floral section, snorting hyacinth! LOL Hugs to you! Annette

  25. P.S. - LOVE your current title photo with the trees and snow...and the text "A New Year"...the two together (picture and words) emote a wonderful sense of new beginnings in me. Very, very pretty, Teresa!

  26. Love your spring bulbs! I looked for some a week ago (good minds think alike--LOL) but, alas, there were none. Sigh. Hope they have some this week; wish I had forced a few. Perhaps next year I shall be more organized.
The day after Epiphany our tree came down and then the decorating for Valentine's Day began...and the dreaming about how to decorate for St Patrick's Day started:) I am trying to tell myself to live in the present, but every minute of daylight we add just gets me wanting to move on to spring too! Well, unless there's a possibility for more snow that is :)
Love your home; love the 'taste' of spring in this post!
    Blessings,
    Aimee

  27. This is how I get the wrinkles out of tablecloths.

I wash them and then throw in the dryer for 15-20 minutes to get to the slightly damp stage.
Then you lay the cloth on your table carefully and it will finish drying flat. (No need to iron either).
My linen one behaves beautifully when done this way.
