Cozy Crochet

Ah, Autumn, grey days, fire in the hearth, dog on my lap, working on crocheting a big "boy blanket" for Caleb.  When he was born I asked my DIL if I could make him a blanket and she told me that he had plenty of blankets.  But then when he got old enough to talk, he told me that I'd made Hayden a blanket and that he'd like one.  Now I admit, this has taken me a LONG time, but I'm getting closer to finishing.  I've told him I will keep working on this until I run out of yarn, which is imminent.  It will be the size it is.. and with no edging.  But when he wraps himself in it, he will know his grandma loved him.. with each and every stitch of the crochet hook.. even when I'm gone, it will be like a hug from his old grandma who loves him completely.  :-)

I may have to make Hayden a bigger one.  :-)

I have used a wonderful cotton yarn that of COURSE is discontinued.  "cottontots" by Bernat.  Why do big yarn companies do that?

What a nice thing to work on when it's chilly outside.

In a while, I will pack up my swim bag and head off to the pool.  It's harder to go when the weather is cold and gray, but my friend Gracie helps me get out of the door as we swim together as often as possible.  I had 3 weeks off of swimming due to a bad cold and then a week at the beach.  But I'm better now and need to get back to the swim routine and get those muscles working - and my heart pumping.  :-)

So... I just wanted to say hello and wish for you a warm place to rest and create wonderful things that your family will enjoy for many years to come.
((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  1. The blanket is lovely, he'll adore it. Of course, if you make another one for Hayden then he will have two blankets and Caleb will only have one... I'm working up to making a crochet blanket. It's such a big undertaking though, I want to be sure I'll enjoy making it. I love using cotton, particularly as I can't wear most wool. A shame when something you love is discontinued isn't it, it seems to happen quite a lot. I hope you enjoyed your swim. I'm not very good at getting into cold water. I did manage to take the boys swimming last week but it was a bit of an effort! CJ xx

  2. I know that blanket is super-soft. I loved that yarn too. I have three skeins in a cream color I'm hoarding. Your grandson will LOVE it.

  3. My mother crocheted some bed/blankets for us years ago. Like 30 years ago. The yarn is acrylic and lasts and lasts. My mother has dementia now and her hand shake fiercely. I love that I have this wrap around me ...
    he will too!

  4. Cozy, warm, cuddly and loved. That's how he will feel all wrapped up in your blanket. It's frustrating when great yarns like that are discontinued. Enjoy your Fire and swimm time with Gracie.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  5. Oh gosh, Cottentots was an awesome yarn! As you said, why oh why do they do that? Such great colours too. I have a scrap in my stash of some lovely strawberry-pink Cottentots left over from a blanket for a little niece. I like those colours you chose for Caleb.

Enjoy your cosy crochet time! :)

  8. I love the blanket and I'm so glad you're making it for him. I still have a blanket my grandmother crocheted for me when I was born and it's very special to me. I love to make things for babies, even though I suspect their mothers don't always want what I make. But there will be no more babies here and I always wished I'd known how to crochet better when I was having them, so it makes me happy to do it for others. I'm glad you understand how that feels.

  11. It's such a cheerful blanket Teresa.....made with love.
I adore the sunny yellow and it looks so soft. The ripple is a wonderfully drapey pattern...with no draughty holes isn't it.
I'm sure your Grandson will treasure it.

  18. It's what I love about the cooler weather - knitting & crocheting. There's nothing quite like snuggling under homemade blankets - especially when there made by Grandma.
    Enjoy your day!

  19. Oh I so love this blanket. You just melted my heart when you said that every time he wrapped it around him, he's know you loved him. Isn't that so true about the things we make out loved ones. All those tiny stitches are like little kisses to let them know we love and adore them. So very sweet. Dang...now I want to make one, too...see what you started...hey, love really does encourage love doesn't it! :) Wishing you a most lovely day sweet friend. :)

  21. A beautiful Grandma is a true gift and I believe sometimes 'actions' with our hooks and yarn, speak louder than words. I have a couple of my Nana's knits that are over 40yrs old and yes I still feel the 'love'. xxx
