Fixing Up the Family Photos

When I was at the Shaklee family reunion this summer in Oklahoma, my beloved cousin Nancy, who was born just 25 days before I was, shared a box of old photos with us.  She had some wonderful photos of our grandparents when young and I asked if I could borrow some and bring them home to scan.  I did that this morning.  I simply love my iPhoto application on my MacBook Pro.  There were spots and imperfections in the scanned images, so I used the "Enhance" and "Retouch" options under "Edit" and fixed them right up!  This is my fantastic grandfather, Vere Shaklee.  He was so sweet and good, we all adored him.

Here is an example of the "Before" photos - this is my sweet grandmother Nina Pierce Shaklee.

Here is after I enhanced the color and "airbrushed" the crack out.

Here is a photo of my cousin Nancy and I (I'm on the left).  Our mothers must have been great friends as they dressed us alike often and had our photos taken together.  :-)

Here's a photo that I had not seen of us - I love it so much as we both look so happy.  Note the matching dresses.

I'm off to the framer to pick up some framed posters of our 100th Anniversary event for Multnomah Falls.  It's next Wednesday and I'm getting excited and even nervous.  More about it later.  Then I'm off to swim.  Gotta jet!  ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  2. Well, I need to look into that photo shopping app. What an incredible difference!! I have all of the old family photos in my possession from Nana's side. Many are from Oklahoma as well. In fact, we used to go there to visit in the summer.
Love the photos of you and your sweet cousin. Such dolls!!!

  5. I love them, Teresa. I'm so glad you treasure these old photos the way I do too. Did you know that just this morning, my husband and I brought some reprints of hundred-year-old photos to the framer's, to be re-framed in their original frame with new mats? They helped us find mats that have color all the way through them, like old-fashioned ones did, instead of white inside like the new ones. It was really fun! I can't wait to see the finished framing.

  7. Walking down memory lane can be to much fun.
Great job on restoring your cousin's photo's.
I love using iPhoto, Mac has always been a user friendly company. That why artists like us love and use Mac's creative applications far more than Window's based machines.
Why you could say, that's the difference between Apples (Mac's) and Oranges (Window's).
Ha, ha I made a funny.
Hope your swim was a great one. Do be careful not to slip on that wet tile.

  10. Such wonderful treasures for you Teresa. I think the boys look a bit like you did when you were little, especially around the eyes in that baby picture of you. You did a fantastic job with the editing on them.

  11. Those old photos are such great family treasures and must bring back some wonderful childhood memories that can be passed down to the next generation. I love how you were able to enhance and edit them, what would we do without modern technology.

  15. How totally awesome that you can fix photos like that. I'm not digitally inclined. Ironically, my husband yesterday was reliving memories through old photos that were in a tin that we got when his dad passed away. He doesn't remember going through them before, but I know he did -- probably just doesn't remember since he was in a fog after his dad passed away and then had to deal with so much heartache and fighting with a couple of his siblings. Have a super Sunday!

  21. We finally have a new Internet provider so I can finally comment on all your great posts again! LOVE the way this app worked on your old family photos---truly wonderful! Can hardly wait till one of my sons can visit so I can ask if he might work a little magic on ours (the oldest being from 1870 or so), Amazing the technology we have today:)
Also, related to the posts above this one--LOVED the period costumes (so neat!) and those sunflowers are amazing! Someday I will have to plant a patch of them because they always make me happy.
    Blessings,
    Aimee
