Blanket Finish and Women's March

Hello my friends.  Goodness, I feel like I've run an emotional marathon over the last 3 days.  I got back into the pool on Friday and swam for an hour with my friend Gracie.  I tried not to think of what was going on in Washington DC that day.  :-) Over the weekend I crocheted on the baby blanket I am doing for my nephew's baby girl and I know her two older sisters will share it with her, it's fun to know all three of them will enjoy it.  And I finished!  I will be mailing this soon.  I love how it turned out.  I made the pattern up, it's 3 double crochet shells back and forth.  I began each row with a "half shell" - I'll have to write this up to share soon.  I used Red Heart Boutique Unforgettable in the "Parrot" colorway.

Laying flat on the dining room table.  I did a simple shell border using my KnitPicks Brava Worsted in "Rouge".  The same color I used on my pink Pussyhat - by the way - I called them and told them about the brown spot and they sent me a replacement skein for free.  :-)

I am definitely going to make more projects using my shell stripe.  Aren't the shells just cute?

Now.. the Women's March.  My old arthritic knees could not march for hours, but in support I knit my own hat and have been wearing it proudly wherever I go.  I'm so proud of my sister Denise who walked in the Portland, Oregon march.  Organizers estimate 100,000 people turned out!  There were marches on every continent of the globe to a count of 2.5 million!

Look at the sea of pink hats in Washington DC!

It did rain during the Portland March - I love this image of all the colorful umbrellas.  My sister wore her Tilly Hat that her daughter got her for Christmas for an upcoming photo safari to Africa.  She said it worked a charm.

I also love this photo I found from googling march images.  Women who inspire and are great.

I was so proud of the women and men who marched to support our rights.  Our current administration is at this very moment slashing and burning things that not only help people in this country but also in other countries.  After the proud high of seeing the people marching I saw in horror on Facebook as right wingers began sneering at the marchers.  Making fun of the marchers.  I was called a "snowflake" because I supported the march.  I must tell you that I got pretty depressed by the right's opposition to the marchers.  But my dear husband has buoyed me up and I have lectured myself and I will not let the people who would tear me down win.  I *AM* the Rebellion!  :-)

Are you WITH ME?  ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  1. Supporting the march is something I wanted to do too. It was empowering to see all those people promising, promising that we will continue to stand up for the rights we have already and we don't want to let go of. I love your crochet ....the shells are lovely

  2. Love the baby blanket and how the colorway fell into a beautiful pattern.
You did a gorgeous job on it and what a nice gifting for the new baby.

WE must buoy each other up as we watch the shame that is going on.
Yes, I am with you all the way Teresa! :)

  3. The blanket is beautiful, Teresa! I hope I can make a blanket using that pattern someday. I am so glad that the Women's March progressed peacefully. In looking at my finances recently I have been challenged yet again to realize that in order to have funds to support the good causes I want to, I have to make cuts/rearrange funding and exercise discipline in saving. My understanding of our national budget is we have similar challenges facing us. I just read an encouraging quote by Barack Obama this morning, although the quote is from May 16, 2010. "At times like these, when the future seems unsettled and uncertain, it can be easy to lose heart. When you turn on the television or read newspapers or blogs, the voices of cynicism and pessimism always seem to be the loudest. Don't believe them." As one who is trying to follow Christ, I know I make mistakes, and that others judge me unfit, or hateful when in fact my intent is to operate in God's wisdom and love. I share your concerns! As a citizen it is my responsibility as I understand it to work as you are to guard the liberty for all that our constitution aims to ensure. Others have fought and died or been wounded like Dayle in the process of working toward liberty. One way I work for liberty is to pray "Save, O Lord, and have mercy on all world rulers, for our president [name], and all our civil authorities...in order that we may live a calm and peaceful life in all godliness and dignity." This does not make me right or better than anyone else, but as I look to Christ who I see as the image of God for man, God's Holy Spirit draws me to experience peace that is not dependent on my circumstances. Crazy? Possible :) But in my own peculiar way I am trying to encourage you as we swim along in life as loving friends. xx

  7. We must not lose faith my friend, then all of those politicians, that are not working for the country but for themselves will win. You look wonderful in your hat and you must keep wearing it. It is a testament to our cause. I am so proud of everyone who marched, everyone all over the world who thinks what is going on is wrong. And yes today was depressing as so much good gets whisked away. Do not bother with those that sneer at people fighting for the rights of others, these are the very people who just might be hurt the most. Or they are keeping their head in the sand not thinking it will affect them, that was not the way I was brought up. I was brought up to speak out to injustice and to help all people, not just the ones I agree with. I love your baby blanket, it will be loved. I hope they know just how special the person who made it is.

  8. Love the blanket. You did an amazing job and I'm so impressed that you designed it yourself. I finally went to the doctor today after my ice fall. He's pretty sure I have a compression fracture in my back. I had to go to the hospital for xrays and will find out tomorrow or Wednesday although I don't think they can do anything about it. Always something fun isn't it? Stay warm.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  9. Oh, yes, I'm with you! I was so heartened by the marches all over the world. The one held closest to where I live was in Los Angeles; they estimated that 750,000 people were there! And, your blanket is so beautiful, I'm sure it will keep your new little great niece cozy and warm.

    Blessings, Victoria

  10. Sadly our news coverage on the marches has not been as comprehensive as yours, it did focus a little on a demonstration outside the American Embassy here in our capital LONDON. Love your blanket, looking forward to seeing the pattern.

  12. Yes, I am with you my friend, well done for standing up for good and right. There was a march in London as well, and the pussyhats were mentioned on the news too, I must go and tell Meredith while I think of it. There are always people who behave badly, especially online it seems. Keep your head held high Teresa, I am so proud of you. It's so heartening to see so many people standing up to be counted. CJ xx

  13. The blanket is gorgeous, Teresa, and I know each stitch was filled with love. The last photo you shared is inspiring. It's really sickening the things that people were saying about all the women and men who marched peacefully around the world. People think they voted for change but they don't realize just how damaging it is going to be. We can not withdraw from the world as a whole. We cannot become isolated and disconnected from the international community. Capitalist cronies who are only looking after their own interests are not going to take care of anyone but themselves. I have friends in many countries around the world and they are all worried. Not a one of them thinks any of this is good. I saw someone call supporters of the marches "snowflakes" -- what does that even mean?

  14. Your blanket is beautiful, Teresa. I love how name of the yarn colour way, 'Parrot'. I happen to really like parrots! Your country needs women like you more than ever. It is amazing to see how much momentum the marches have gained, there was a march here in Glasgow, too. I couldn't go but I wish I did. x

  15. I'm with you, absolutely! Several women In my art group marched in OR, WA, and even Hawaii while on vacation! I made a donation to Planned Parenthood in their honor since I was unable to march.
Your blanket is beautiful, love the colors and shell pattern. I used the "Unforgettable" yarn to crochet a cowl and while the softness and drape is wonderful, the yarn tangled like crazy while coming out of the skein. Grrrrr.
