Family Stories

My cousin Mark and his wife Karen were here visiting the last few days.  They live in Watonga, Oklahoma, where I was born.  His mom was my mother's sister, Bonnie.  There were 12 children in the family.  12!  Rowan, Glen, Mac, Don, Betty, Florence, Harlena (Nene), Susie, Eva, Margaret, Fern & Bonnie.  Mom's mom was one of 16 kids!  Can you imagine?  They made good time and got here a day early.  We pulled one of our salmon out of the freezer and Kristi made this dinner for us while we visited on the deck.  My sister Roberta joined us.  How many children were in your parents family?

Kristi called us in for dinner and she'd set the table with my new dishes, I was so pleased!  What a good daughter-in-law!

We lingered at the table telling family stories.  My aunt Bonnie gave me this crystal vase that was my mother's mother's mother's!  My great grandmother whom I never met.

Mark and Karen went to visit her 95 year old aunt yesterday and I volunteered at Multnomah Falls.  It was very busy!  I think a lot of people had come to Oregon to watch the eclipse and were staying on to see more of the state.  My sister joined us again and we all went to Tad's Chic Dump for dinner.  :-) When we returned home we sat on the deck and visited with Travis, Kristi and the boys.  They headed off early this morning for Seattle, WA where they are now aboard their cruise ship headed to Alaska.  I look forward to hearing their stories and seeing their photos when they return in a week.  They left their 34 foot 5th wheel trailer here while they are on their cruise.

Our grandsons start school on Monday.  Summer is almost over.  It goes so fast.  I'm trying to talk myself into going swimming today, I'm kind of tired out.  LOL!  I hope you have a wonderful weekend!!  ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  2. Kristi is the best but so are you my friend. So glad you had a wonderful visit with your cousins. My Mom was an only child and my Dad was the baby of six. His brothers and sisters children were so much older than me. I was the age of their kids. Still it is always nice to see family.

  5. What a good time to visit with family and Kristi is a GEM. You are so blessed to have her. She does so many thoughtful things for all of you. My parents family was small. Mom had three siblings, Dad only one. BUT, Dennis Mom had sixteen siblings and his Dad had nine. That was a huge adjustment for me when we got married. A huge family after having a very small one growing up. Hope you have a wonderful time swimming Teresa. I'm sure you're missing Gracie.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  6. So glad you had a good visit with your cousins! Visiting and traveling is fun, but tiring, isn't it :) My dad was one of four kids, and my mom was one of five, but I think my maternal grandma was one of nine and maternal grandpa was one of ten! One of my great nephews started school last week and we noted schools in session in some of the towns we drove through from Nebraska to Oregon over the last five days...but we have 28 days before Autumn is official! Happy Weekend! xx

  7. Glad you enjoyed such a nice visit. Goodness, I can't even imagine what it's like growing up in such a big family. I have only one brother. But my mom has 5 sisters and one brother. And my dad was the youngest of 6 with three sisters and two brothers (like the Brady Bunch :) There would have been 7 siblings but one baby died. My husband is also one of 6, with two brothers and three sisters (just like my dad). I love visiting anyone in their 90's ... the insight and stories they have to share is amazing. We should be sitting down and listening to them more rather than all that noise pollution that's filling everyone's heads now, politically and otherwise. Have a great weekend.

  8. Nice to hear family stories. Enjoyed some at a cousin reunion a few weeks ago. My mom had one brother and dad was baby of 5 siblings. I was one of 5 and Phil one of 5 with a brother that died within hours of birth. Now there's just another brother. Glad people were enjoying the falls. I would do the same thing before going home. I have my eclipse photos up so hop over. Kristi sure is a go getter for food and table settings. Looks so inviting! Enjoy your weekend.

  9. Good that you are enjoying family time; you sure are a busy lady! Love your gorgeous dishes! They are my favorite color. My mom was one of 4 and my dad, one of 12! He had 7 brothers and all but the youngest served during WW2. Can you imagine? Luckily, they all came home unscathed. So many big families in past generations. We will soon be off on a cruise to Alaska; my second time. It is a wonderful experience.

  10. What a huge family you are from. Both my parents were only one of two siblings. Quite unusual . Your daughter in law is wonderful. I couldn't borrow her I suppose ;). Thanks for adding me to your blog roll, I'm getting lots of visitors from your blog now. Have a good Sunday. B x

  11. My family is quite small, as is my husbands. But my friend here is one of 16. Instead of having dinner with family at home, they rent a hall.
I know your cousins will have a great time cruising Alaska.

  12. My Mama is one of two. Her brother Johnny was born 13 years after her. Their father died when Johnny was just a baby, and Mama had to be a mother to him, when her mother had to go to work She wound up raising Johnny, and he is like a brother to me. As he lived with us for much of his life. My Dad is one of three, with two sisters much older, who were like Mothers to him. Small family. I always wanted to have a bunch of kids!!!
Glad you got to enjoy your Aunt. Lovely vase too.

  13. Teresa - my dad was one of 9 siblings, and my mom was one of six (and I am one of seven). Some of my greatest memories are the German weddings of my older cousins. They were always in the same church with the reception at the same hall afterward. Us younger kids were always running around and skidding across the wooden floor. They had wonderful traditions such as the bride being wheeled into the hall for the reception in a (clean) wheelbarrow. On my father's side, his parents started a tradition of a summer family reunion. For many years, it was held at a large park, which was reserved for that purpose. There were paddleboats and a playground. The adults always played a game of softball, and horseshoes were also popular. We didn't get much pop as kids, and I can still remember drinking as much red soda pop as we could - they used large horse troughs filled with ice to hold all the soda - we always came home with a red ring around our mouths. Thanks for giving me an opportunity to walk down memory lane!
