Grab the Popcorn

I read the Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Pie Society book a while back and loved it.  I found out they'd made a movie of it and found it on Netflix on Sunday.  It was so good!

Here is the book cover.  It's about a writer who learns about how a group of people struggled through the German occupation of the island of Guernsey during WW II.  She visits the island to learn more.  The book and movie tell about what she finds.

One of our favorite English actresses plays the lead in the movie, Lily James.  The farmer on the island is played by Michiel Huisman.

I tried to snap photos of some of the grander scenery in the movie and was always too late.  LOL!

I absolutely LOVED the period designs of the sets, the clothes, the cottages, the items in the sets, all antique.

If there is any chance of you watching this movie, I can guarantee you will love it.

And I loved the ending!!  Do let me know if you read the book and what you thought of it, and if you've seen the movie.

Travis worked on clearing out more things in the barn that we don't need, note the dumpster in front of the barn.  He brought out our two old goat milking stands that Dayle built painted white, and I embellished.  We took them to the county fair when we showed our goats and also used them for years at home in my milking room.  A stainless steel bowl of COB (corn, oats and barley) was placed in the hole and they ate it while we milked them.  Morning and night for years and years.  I put a photo of them in the Corbett Group on Facebook - free - and within the hour a young woman came to pick them up.  Sigh.  The end of an era.  Poof.  Gone.

I passed some time on the deck enjoying the flowers before the cold and winter takes them away.

I'm now reading a Debbie Macomber book, "The Shop on Blossom Street".  I'm finding it a bit depressing and predictable.  I did a search for "books similar to Rosamund Pilcher" and am going to try "Indian Summer" by Marcia Willett and "Circle of Friends" by Maeve Binchy - both are downloaded onto my iPad.  Any good book recommendations?  ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  1. I loved the book and the movie and....I’m hoping to go to Guernsey in May or July next year!!

  2. I also read the book and thoroughly loved the movie. Love the period pieces.

I read and enjoyed all of Rosamunde Pilcher books. Maeve Binchy wrote in a similar style. Unfortunately we lost her.

You might like Kate Morton. She wrote the Distant Hours, The Forgotten Garden and the House at Riverton. I haven't read the Lake House yet.

I also like the Seaside Knitters books by Sally Goldenbaum. Cute, fun easy read.

    Love seeing your garden!
    Thanks,
    Donna

  3. Happy Monday Teresa! Thanks for the information about the video. We are new to Netflix, so when I go home tomorrow I will definitely try to watch that movie. I can understand why you’re a bit sad at giving away the milking stands. Life does seem to pass by doesn’t it?
We are in the throes of cleaning out the trailer and getting ready to close up for the winter. Dennis has a late meeting tonight, so I’ll be out here by myself. I’m washing and oiling woodwork and doing all of the deep cleaning before we close up. We’ve taken several pick up loads of outdoor furniture, grill, etc., home and I have taken most of the food home in my car. I don’t know why I worry about doing such a thorough cleaning before we close up. The dust seems to infiltrate over the winter anyway and I have to do it all over again when we move back in in the spring! So...I am enjoying my second to the last night in our little cottage for the season. I’ll go home tomorrow and then we’ll spend Friday night out here and close it all up Saturday morning. Sad. I’m definitely not ready for summer to end.
I hope you have as a beautiful day today over on your side of the state as we do here. The sky is an amazing color of blue and I’m enjoying every moment of it.
    Blessings, Betsy

  4. The story of the goat milking stands is lovely, and I so admire that you gave them away for others to use. I turned the heater on this morning which makes it a bit harder to convince myself I want to go swimming, but it was too chilly in WA to swim in the outdoor pools available last week, so I am going to swim in the indoor pool here today :) xx

  5. Guernsey is at the top of my list to see! We had dinner every evening on the Queen Mary 2 with a couple that was from Guernsey. I hope to visit there one day.
I love all of Maeve Binchy's books as well as Kate Morton's like Donna said!
You all are doing a great job of clearing out, even though it can be painful.
Hopefully there will be more days ahead to enjoy your lovely garden. ♥

  6. I loved that film, the attention to detail with the period in time was excellent. How about the series of Rhanna books by Christine Marion Freaser, she is long gone but the books are a very pleasant read.

  7. Saw the movie and loved it. Another movie with Lily James and a handsome young British actor; Ansel Endorf called Baby Driver. He is Baby and drives getaway cars. It is a grittier movie. The car action scenes are too much. Think Bullitt on the other side of the law!!But you love the two young lovers.

  8. Thankyou for the movie/book recommendation! Sorry I’ve been awol so long, but I’m back now :) I love Rosamund Pilcher and indeed anything by Maeve Binchy. Hope you enjoy Circle of Friends. Her books are all great, Tara Road and Scarlet Feather stick out in my mind.

  11. I watched the movie a couple of weeks ago... loved it! I just finished reading "The Ice Cream Queen of Orchard Street" and that was pretty good.

  12. Macomber's books are definitely formulaic and her women always need to be saved by a man. :::sigh:::

None of my reading has really grabbed me lately. Hoping that the new Tom Hanks book I picked up will jump start my reading mojo.

  14. I am going to look for the book and indeed the film sounds like just my kind of thing. It must have been sad to see the goat stands go but at least you know they we will be used again.

  15. How funny we watched this last week too! Having read and loved the book quite a while ago I was looking forward to it! I think the photography and scenery in the film was beautiful and enjoyed the 'atmosphere' of it all. I loved the book so much I might re read it. We've been to Guernsey and recognised some of it in the film...also recognised some places in Devon that we've been to as well! I know what you mean about trying to find the right books to enjoy...not always easy! Have a lovely week dear Teresa XXX

  16. hi there, lovely blog. I have just watched that film, I'd read the book about 3 years ago...It was really well filmed, loved the war time fashion and home styles, I'm such a visual person and like you i loved the landscape and vintage props. I'm sure some of it must have been filmed in Cornwall but i'll have to check that out~~ I'm living in Devon and Cornwall is our neighbour and i'm sure its that coast on the harbour scenes. though, most films are on quite a few different locations to get the look right. I'm reading the 'Canal boat cafe' (forgotten the authors name)...its a book a got in the Oxfam charity...but I find myself drifting of it~ It had me hooked at the start...I will persevere with it!

  17. I haven't seen the film or read the book but you have piqued my interest. I loved Guernsey when we visited. My parents went there a lot as well. Also enjoyed Maeve Binchy and Rosamund's Pilcher.
Well done on letting go of things. I am trying to, struggling a little. Hugs Anne x

  18. I enjoyed the book and later the film. I think you will like " Circle of Friends " which is also on film. I have had all of Maeve Binchy's books.A particular favourite of Mine is Night of Rain and Stars. Set in Greece, not her usual setting of Ireland.

  19. Country Rabbit is correct. The harbour scenes were filmed in Clovelly.

  20. I have really wanted to watch that movie! However it is not yet shown on Netflix Australia yet. I might have to find the DVD. I'm currently reading a sci-fi novel called Linesman by S.K. Dunstall who happens to be one of my work colleagues!
Your garden is looking lovely. It's always so sad when Autumn and winter take hold. Then you can have Spring to look forward to again!

  22. I both read the Guernsey book and saw the movie - loved both!!

Those goat milking stands are just so cool - and so nice that you gave them away for free! I find it so difficult to part with things that have sentimental value to me.

I just finished reading Ordinary Grace and really enjoyed it.
