Hibernation Knitting

At this time of year I actually feel that I might be part bear.  I go into a hibernation mode.  The week between Christmas and New Years is when I'm at my peak "bear-ness".  I don't make any appointments, meetings or any other scheduled things where I must leave my cozy fireside den.  I was supposed to volunteer at Multnomah Falls yesterday, much to my chagrin, but due to the government shutdown, the Visitors Center is closed.

And so.. I knit on my cowl, play Words with Friends and Scrabble online, watch TV and generally take a break from society and the outside world.

I found straightaway that I needed to keep track of the next row on this cowl.. first you knit to the first stitch marker, then back down... then to the 2nd stitch marker and back down.. then to the top.. then back to the bottom.  I have goofed up a few times so try to keep ticking away and do it right.

I haven't re-used a color as yet, when it's time for a new color I roll it into a ball but leave the unused colors in their skeins so as to keep track.

When the neck part fits over my head easily, I believe it will be time to close it up.  I think I will use the buttons that came in the box to close up the end.

I dropped a stitch in the purple section and had to use my crochet hook to pick it up.. I *should* have pulled it out the 3 rows but to be honest.. that strikes fear in my heart and that, my friends, is why I like crochet better.. if you have to pull out a row or 3 it's easy to do and start back up.  Putting pulled out knitting back on a needle and knowing where to put back the stitch markers is just too frightening.  SO.. there is a little bit of "not right" in this.. but I'm not perfect and neither is my knitting.  :-)

And so.. we are going to watch Game of Thrones from season 1 in order to get ready for the final season, 8, which will be shown in April 2019.  Only 6 episodes.  It really is amazing how you can totally forget how it began and each episode is like you're seeing it for the first time.  Did you watch GOT?

Are you a hibernator in the winter?  :-)

I'm off to comment on my blog friend's posts while I watch.  I'm very loyal to those who are always faithful and leave me a note.  :-)

  2. Hello Teresa. Thank you so much for popping by.
I don't plan anything between Christmas and New Year either! Our eldest went home today, youngest and family came round so that they could say goodbye to each other. Eldest granddaughter very upset they were going home and didn't say much. I'm so thrilled these cousins love each other and pray it lasts.
DH has muttered about going out tomorrow but like you I want to stop in! Hugs Anne X

  3. I am a fellow bear at this time of year, enjoying puzzles, crosswords, Sudoku and crochet by the fire, as well as catching up with my favourite films. We do have to walk our dogs for a good hour or more a day, but that's about it for me. I came late to GOT and binge watched the whole thing at the beginning of the year, so looking forward to the next series. The colours of your cowl remind me of Edinbugh rock that my grandparents used to give me as a child, so pretty.

  4. I'm a hibernator at this time of the year too - except it's full summer and mighty hot to be outside in the sun! It's my sort out time whether photos, letter writing, knitting, getting ready for the start of the new school year after a 6-8 week break - i love it!

  5. Your cowl is coming right along and it looks beautiful. I love the look of knitting, but I agree that crochet is much easier and faster. We never watched GOT, but there are other shows that have us hooked! I am a bit of a hibernator, but after a while I need to get out and enjoy the fresh air!

  6. I do love your term 'bear-ness' as it describes perfectly this hibernating time of the year. The pointy sticks scare me too and I much prefer to crochet. Enjoy your cosy time. xx Susan

  9. when it's cloudy and rainy...yep, I want to hibernate as well! But sometimes I can't! I was at my brother's apt today and he had one light one. I need more light if I'm going to stay an hour, and he did turn another light on! Your shawl is pretty and I don't like tearing out a few rows of knitting either! If there's a mistake, shhhh! Don't tell as they probably won't notice it! Happy New Year and have fun inside your cozy, pretty office! Hugs!

  10. Your cowl is coming along very well. I know what you mean about having to rip back knitting as compared to crochet. Crochet is much easier. But I do like the looks of knitted garments especially. The colors that Alicia chose for her minis are just so beautiful. I use a very similar method of ticking off sections that I have to count decreases and increases in. Like the sleeves for Alex’s sweater I’m knitting now.

Yes, I’m a hibernator in the winter. We’ve had over 7 inches of snow in the last two days and if I had my way I would never leave the house until spring.

    Blessings,
    Betsy

  11. I think hibernating in winter is very normal Teresa, before we had electricity it would have been enforced on us. Enjoy your down time. Your knitting is looking lovely. We have never seen Game of Thrones but my brother loves it. Perhaps we'll have to take a peep. Hugs xxx

  12. Hello true and faithful friend. I don't think a lot of people realize just how many people and places are affected by a government shutdown. Sure wish folks in Washington would get some common sense. I can hibernate any time of the year. :) Sure can't tell that you dropped a stitch in your knitting. I for one don't think perfection should ever be expected when something is handmade. Have a good day!

  13. No GOT for me (not much TV for me at all - lol). I am definitely love to hibernate, but can alwAys be convinced to go out (yesterday a meet up with Dee for brunch, coffee with knitting and then a visit to a yarn shop!). Your Christmas celebrations looked lovely.

  14. Your knitting is coming along beautifully, Teresa. I know your feeling about pulling out the rows of stitches to fix a problem. It's very nerve racking! I've so enjoyed seeing all the goodies that were in your advent calendar. Have a very Happy New Year to you and I look forward to reading more of your wonderful posts next year 🎇🎆🎇

  15. I dont know , maybe I'm hibernating too. I just don't feel like going anywhere today. Garter and I always get into that dropped stitch fight. No one will see your not right part!

  16. I like the idea of hibernation. My entire family is in hibernation mode really, it has been rather peaceful but of late, two certain little boys have started bickering more - a clear sign of cabin fever -)
Your cowl is looking lovely already and I am looking forward to seeing it finished. I prefer knitting over crochet, mostly because it is more economical with yarn use. When I have to unravel a small section of knitting with stitch markers, I do this one stitch after another. It may sound tedious but in the end, it takes less time than trying to replace the markers in the correct space and to put stitches back on the needles without twisting them. Your not quite right section is completely invisible :-)

Happy new year to you and yours xx
