I pulled out my beading tray this weekend and got busy.. have you ever heard of Larimar? My sister Denise found a pair of earrings and a necklace on one of her travels and she wears them all the time. She found them in a jewelry shop on the main street in St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands.
Larimar, also called "Stefilia's Stone", is a rare blue variety of the silicate mineral pectolite found only in the Dominican Republic, in the Caribbean. Its coloration varies from white, light-blue, green-blue to deep blue.
So.. I'd been admiring the stone and found some rondelles online and ordered some to make a bracelet for me and when Denise saw them she wanted one too. They finally arrived and I first made Denise's and then mine. Here it is next to my Ethiopian opal bracelet I made. Have you heard of Larimar?
Another shot of it.
I also re-strung a turquoise bracelet I'd made for my sister and she wanted a different kind of clasp.
While I was at it I restrung the watch band for my Apple Watch using the clear recycled glass beads from the 4Ocean bracelets I've ordered. Some of the recycled fishing line cord they were strung on broke. For each bracelet you buy they will pull 1 pound of trash from the ocean.. I've bought many and given them as gifts.
I really like how the band turned out.
Our weather has turned cold! Dayle cleaned out the wood pellet stove and lit it yesterday and we're enjoying the lovely radiant warmth emanating from it.
I was given this photo of me from 1987! We were taking the kids class to visit Chief Lalooska's long house.. we got to attend a performance of the Chief wearing hand-carved masks and telling a story in front of the roaring wood fire in the center of the great hall.
Lelooska Museum is a Native American Kwakwaka'wakw cultural museum in Ariel, Washington, United States. It was established in 1977. Collections include baskets, parfleches, corn husk bags, dolls, spoons, cradles, moccasins, tomahawks, pipes, pipe bags, dresses, a 15-foot birch bark canoe and a replica fur trade store.
I'm wearing 2 necklaces in this photo of trade beads from my collection, these are called "Russian Blues". Russian explorers traded Blue Russian Beads to the Native Americans in Alaska and Canada starting in the 1700s. Their appeal lies in their Cobalt Blue color and their faceted appearance. Blue Russian Beads likely originated in Czechoslovakia. Russian traders may have purchased them directly from traders in Europe, or possibly from the Hudson Bay Company.
Our two grandsons asked to spend the night last week and Kristi suggested we bring them home on Saturday and she'd make dinner for us all. This is our "grand-dog" Ozzie. He loves to cuddle with Dayle and I. Isn't he cute? Kristi made a roasted whole chicken in her new Instant Pot, corn bread dressing and baked acorn squash with butter and brown sugar in the cavity. YUM!
Our son Shawn and grandson Michael have moved into their own home as of last week. We're now down to the two of us living here. :-) Here is their new home. Now we will begin turning the two bedrooms upstairs into proper guest rooms.
The new operating system on my phone that I just downloaded informed me I could make my own emoji.. I got the pick the hair color and style, eye color, skin tone and all. Fun, huh?
That is pretty much my news.. how are things going at your end? ((hugs)), Teresa :-)
Nice beadwork, Teresa! I love that light blue and turquoise has always been a favorite of mine.
ReplyDeleteWow! Lots of news! Your bracelets are beautiful. I used to go to a beading shop near here and it always took me forever to choose which beads to make into a bracelet. There are just so many beautiful colors. I love all those blues. Also love your jacket in that photo from 1987. We also use a pellet stove but fortunately haven't had to start it up yet this season. Do you have a thermostat on yours? We had to add one as it got too warm in our living room without it. So nice that your grandsons wanted to spend the night with you!
ReplyDeleteGoodness, busy must be your middle name. Beading has always been a favorite craft for me. We should get together for some beading time or knitting/crocheting.
ReplyDeleteOzzie sure has grown from the wee pup he was. And he's so handsome, too.
It's fun to remember times and places from old snap shots. I cringe having my photo taken these days. I'm not the wee lass I was a while back. Oh well, such is life.
Congrats to your son and his new home. Even better is being able to decorate your guest room(s) again. That's the fun part, (smile).
Loving the emoji. Boy those new iPhones are a wonder. So many fun features.
What have you been crocheting on lately? Do share!
Your Larimar beaded bracelet is beautiful, Teresa. I've seen it in the Caribbean and admired its beauty. Your opal bracelet is a beautiful compliment to the larimar. You are so creative, my friend. I'm sure you enjoyed the fire. We've been so hot here, but did enjoy some badly needed rain today. Tomorrow and Wednesday the temperatures are going back into the 90's but then should moderate toward the weekend. Oh, I love your emoji! Have a nice week.
ReplyDeleteHi Teresa! Your new bracelet is so pretty. I hadn't heard of larimar until you talked about it. I also like the band you made for the apple watch. Your talents never cease. Including your artwork for the new emoji. It looks like you!!!
ReplyDeleteGreat picture of you at the long house. You haven't changed much in all these years. :-)
Shawn and Michaels new house looks very sweet and cozy. Is it much too quiet now at your house since all of the kids and grandkids have moved out and taken their dogs too?
I have an Instant Pot and my favorite thing to make in it is hard boiled eggs. The shells fall right off when you cook them in the Instant Pot. We have deviled eggs a lot more often now that it's easy to shell the eggs.
We're finally home. It was a long, long drive home since we had to avoid Montana coming home.
Blessings,
Betsy
I have not heard of Larimar, either, but really enjoyed learning about it, your gorgeous bead work, the museum, your latest news in general, and your cute emoji through your beautiful photos and narrative!
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting! ((hugs))
Lovely new bracelets, and I love that you have made one for your sister too, no doubt she will enjoy wearing it with her other larimar jewellery. I hope your son and grandson will be happy in their new home, it looks beautiful. Brilliant emoji, very you! Hope you have a good week, CJ xx
ReplyDeleteI'd not heard of Larimar, but I love the colour. Ozzie has a gorgeous face and looks like a real "cuddly" sort of dog! And if someone asked me which blogger the emoji was - I would have said you! xx
ReplyDeleteLarimar is such a pretty stone. I had never heard of it. I like the bracelets you made. It must be very strange to have the house all to yourselves again. I hope it is not too difficult to get used to. Have a lovely midweek x
ReplyDeleteI like your bracelets! I need to work on some as well for a vendor event in Nov. I bought actual stones at Bulga beads near Depoe Bay. Chilly here as well. Saw beautiful snow covered Mt. Hood on my way to work this a.m. Megan made Chinese pork stir fry food for dinner tonight. It was good. Then ice cream for dessert. Yum! Enjoy your week--🎃🍂🌰
ReplyDeleteYour bracelets are lovely, you are clever the way you make them. So nice you had time with your grandsons staying over and then a delicious meal made by Kristi. Love your son Shawn's new home! It will be quieter but I'm sure you'll get used to that and enjoy doing up the guest rooms. Love your emoji...could tell it was you! Have a happy October dear Teresa XXX
ReplyDeleteLovely beading Teresa, Larimar is a new stone to me and very pretty it is. Exciting times ahead for you and Dayle being home alone again! Your granddog Ozzy is a beauty, Bear and he would be great friends! Your emoji is just perfect I love it! Hugs xxx
ReplyDeleteI like your opal and your Larimar bracelets, I have long admired opals. I had not heard of Larimar.
ReplyDeleteThe colour of the Larimar is exquisite. What a change for you and Dayle to be on your own again. I bet it's quiet! xx Susan
ReplyDeleteI love your beadwork. I've never heard of Larimar... I learn something new every day!
ReplyDeleteLove your bracelets Teresa. Just the two of you? Wow it must be so quiet at your house.
