The Birds and the Bees

Let's start with the birds. Yes, real birds.  What were YOU thinking?  :-)  The Goldfinches are back!  Lots of them!  There can be 20-25 birds on our feeders at one time.  I took out my big Lumix camera to get some close-ups of them.

Are you looking at me?  Huh?  I'm keeping an eye on you and that beeping contraction in your hands.  They love the cracked sunflower seeds in this big feeder and also the Niger thistle, plus whole sunflower seeds, wild bird seed and suet cakes.  The birds love it here as they dine like kings and then fly over to the Japanese red maple then hop down into the creek for a drink and a bath.

Hungry little guys.

The three amigos.

We had a small bag of Yukon Gold potatoes that had begun to grow, so Dayle dug two furrows and planted them.  This will be interesting.  We'll plant peas and beans behind them on trellises.

I bought some plant ID stakes on Amazon and will be putting them in front of the different vegetable rows.

The lettuces are growing!  We ran a few errands yesterday and got some more starts.  Peas, chives, rosemary, thyme, parsley, zucchini, tomato, onion sets, green onions, peppermint, and flowers.

My Redbud tree which I bought last year, I'm happy to see it looking well and flowering nicely.

Pretty.

Our apple tree of unknown variety sure does put out some pretty flowers!

A few photos..

And here we go.. the bee part of the post.  :-)

White Lilac

Our little Bantam hen, Boots, has gone broody.  Poor girl doesn't realize we don't have a rooster and even if she sits on the eggs, they will not hatch.

The Star of Bethlehem has gone rather nuts but it's soooo pretty.

The Lilacs are fleeting so I'll be sharing their beauty for a few more posts.

I bury my nose in these big spikes of flowers.  Breathe deep. Swoon.

This is the dark purple French Lilac.

My very favorite (shhh.. don't tell the others) lilac is this white edged one called "Sensation".  I'll take some photos when it's fully opened up and share soon.

A closeup of the blossom.

And so.. I must bid you adieu, we have things to plant as the rain is forecast for this afternoon.  I hope you are all finding ways to make the most of your confinement.  Do share with us what you're doing!  ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  1. It's looking gorgeous out there, you've obviously been working hard. The goldfinches are very pretty - different to our goldfinches. The lilacs are still looking good. CJ xx

  2. My goodness, things are really coming to life on your farm! The goldfinches are gorgeous as are all of the flowers and flowering trees. You're soon going to dine like kings on the bounty of your garden. I planted potatoes years and years ago when we were first married. About 3 hills if I remember right and they produced enough potatoes to get us through the winter!
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  8. Oh I love your pictures of the goldfinches. I've only seen purple finches so far this year..or maybe the goldfinches haven't brightened up just yet. Such a sweet picture of your hen too. Fletch grows potatoes every year. They are wonderful - nothing like going out and digging fresh potatoes and then roasting them. YUM!!
