September Morn

I'd like to introduce you to a new member of the family.  She is called a Fenton September Morn Nymph.  What shall we name her?  I had been searching for a jadeite green one to go in my lotus bowl, I had recently acquired the jadeite green "frog" which hold flowers, the frogs have a bigger hole in the center for a candle.  Fenton made her in the 1920s in many different colors - she has a base that fits in the candle part of the frog.  At any rate, I could not find a green one.. but I did find an opalescent pink one and I thought she would look pretty with the green bowl.

This is the painting that inspired Fenton to make their nymph.  It's called "September Morn" by French painter Paul Chabas in 1912.  Read the fascinating story about it HERE.

A close photo of my 100 year old girl.

Side view.

Back.  What would you name her?

This is the green one which I may never find.

Dayle installed the glass doors, he found some old windows in our barn we saved when we had new windows put in our 114 year old farmhouse.  He took them to the glass shop and they took it out of the old windows, cut it to fit and put it in the doors.  They are properly old and wavy and I love them!  Here is Dayle nailing some small brads to hold the wood panels in which were coming out.  Mocha is offering her support, actually she's extremely nosy.

He had to glue a part that was split and will screw in the bottom door in a bit.  She's not ready for a full photo shoot.. lol.

A guy in Jadeite Junkies was selling several things so I adopted a few of them.  I know.. I know.. don't say it.  I needed a cookie jar, darn it.  Right?

I finally got my last custard cup to fill my rack.

This is Fenton and is called a "Macaroon" cookie jar.

My first canister - some collectors have a whole set of these.

And the small mixing bowl that came with old 1930's Sunbeam Mixmaster mixers.  My mom had one!  We will get lots of good use out of this bowl.

I will have more progress on my Meadow blanket to show you on my Monday blog post.   I hope you have a great weekend!

💝🌹 Hearts and Flowers 🌹💝

🌹💝 Would you believe we looked (as in Dayle looked in the attic) for my Valentine tablecloth for days and finally found it for me?  What a wonderful husband!  He surprised me with the roses several days ago and all they needed was the tablecloth.  What he couldn't find was the bin where my 3 cute little valentine children figurines were.  Bummer.  Oh well!

These roses are gorgeous and are holding up well.. sometimes they droop quickly but these are standing tall and proud and are opening slowly.  So pretty.

I laid out my handmade heart pins - the one on the top left is a gift from my blog friend Betsy and I think the knitted one is from Gracie and I made the 3 felt and sequin ones 20 years ago!

I spent time scrubbing the inside and shelves of my blue cabinet and my grandson Caleb helped on the lower ones and the top.

Once they were scrubbed with soap and water and dry I spread some wood "feed and wax" on the shelves.  The wood drank it up and glowed!  Dayle found some old windows in our barn with old wavy glass and took them and the cabinet doors to a glass shop where they cut the glass to fit and installed it, he picked them up yesterday next he'll screw the doors in place.

My new jadeite "baby".  It's a Houze Ivy Ball - the base has two adorable little seals holding the ball.  It originally came with a handblown light green glass ball with a small hole at the top, but most of these got separated from their "ball" and only the base is found by itself.  So, I got a replacement 4" ivy ball which has etched vines and a flower.  I love it.

The little seals are charming, they have little webbed feet, beady eyes and the tail is webbed, too.

I decided to take a few cuttings from my heart leafed philodendron to root in water.  I'm already enjoying having it beside me and will enjoy watching the roots emerge and grow.

The little roots were already trying to grow on the vine so I know this will thrive.

I have no progress to show you on the Meadow blanket because I decided I needed to weave in all the ends before starting the next group of colors.  I finished that last evening.  Today I will get started on it again.  For those who are curious where I am on my purple shawl, it's in a red leather satchel waiting until I get around to it again.  Time out!  LOL!  I hope you're having a fine week and thanks for visiting.  ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

Blanket Update and a Thank You

Whew... I just finished all 15 colors on my Meadow blanket.  I am thinking I will make a squarish blanket and it might only require 4 or 5 repeats of the colors.

Lucy was brilliant to start with purples and end with purples so when I start the second sequence the colors will mesh nicely.

Almost the whole width.  The colors in this photo are more accurate.

I received the most wonderful and thoughtful gift from one of my dear blog friends, Lorraine from "MamasMercantile" blog.  She lives on the island of Harris in Scotland in a darling little cottage, or croft.  She used local Harris tweed to make this amazing needle book.  I adore the woven wool fabric - All Harris Tweed is woven on a treadle loom at an islander’s home, not at a mill. The warp and weft yarns arrive from the mill. Then the weaver sets to work, hand tying the new yarns to the tail-ends of the previous weave, to make it easier to thread onto the loom. Weaving the cloth can now begin under the careful observation of the weaver.

She put green felt inside so I can put my collection of sewing needles in it.  What a great gift!  Thank you, Lorraine!!

Our DIL Kristi made this amazing artwork for Dayle for Christmas, it's done with "Diamond Dots", she hand applied each dot to make this beautiful piece - we have it hung in our dining room.  Thanks, Kristi!

My latest piece of jadeite, it was made by Fire King in 2000.  I am looking forward to making a big pan of brownies or a carrot cake in this.  Some collectors say not to use it, but I like to use my green beauties.  :-)

My SIL D'Ann and brother Rob were going through some old family photos and found this one of my sister Denise and I at Christmas when I was in 8th grade.  It's kind of bittersweet as this was taken  not long after mom divorced our father and we were living in an apartment having just started a new school, so no friends or family around.  Mom worked a swing shift so my little sister and I were on our own almost all day.  She left for work shortly after we got home from school.  So, if you had a stable life with your family around you, count your blessings.  :-)

My brother also scanned this photo of my adventurous mom riding an elephant when she visited Thailand!  She is the red-headed one.

Chef Dayle produced a delightful dinner of broiled filet mignon, baked potatoes and perfectly steamed asparagus.  YUM!  We have our grandson Caleb with us so he got treated to this dinner with us.

Well.. that's my story for the day.  I hope you have a wonderful week ahead.  We are staying close to home by the fire.  And I will work on more stripes!  ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

Happy Days Are Here Again

Hello my dear readers!  Thank you for dropping in for a visit.  The sun is shining, my heart is happy, the future looks bright and all is well in the world.  :-)  I finished 2 more rows of color on my Meadow blanket that I'm doing with Lucy at Attic24 blog.  3 more colors before I have used all 15 colors, then I will repeat the pattern.  I must say I'm enjoying the color play in this.  Lucy designed 2 colorways, random stripe and a "color story" which has the colors of looking at the meadow with more greens at the bottom and going to blues at the top.  She also shows us a "color sample" where she melds the colors which is my choice, I'm on "team color sample repeat".  The colors I will do over the weekend are Cloud Blue, Lavender and Wisteria.  :-)

Dayle got his Covid vaccine yesterday at the Veterans Administration facility in Vancouver, Washington.  I am happy he got it but I have to wait until February 28th.  Wah.  On his way home he stopped at the "Candy Basket" and picked up a few goodies.  They make their own chocolate in a factory there.  :-)

He also brought me some chocolate covered peanuts.  Peanuts are healthy, right?  :-)  I put them in one of my jadeite refrigerator containers.

These are yummy.

Dayle made a family favorite recipe - it's called "Cocktail Meatballs" but we call them "Sweet & Sour Meatballs".  We serve them over rice and put crushed pineapple on top.  Mmmmm.

Cocktail Meatballs

1 lb ground beef
2 TBS bread crumbs
1 egg
1/2 tsp salt
1/3 C chopped green pepper
1/2 C chopped onion
2 TBS butter
1 can tomato soup
2 TBS brown sugar
4 tsp Worcestershire
1 TBS mustard
1 TBS vinegar
Optional - serve with crushed pineapple on top over rice

Mix ground beef, crumbs, egg and salt.  Make about 50 small meatballs, brown in frying pan or under broiler, turning to brown on all sides.  Saute pepper and onion in butter until tender, stir in rest of ingredients.  Put meatballs in shallow baking pan, cover with sauce.  Bake 20 minutes at 350°.

Introducing my newest jadeite plate, it's a Fire King "Sheaves of Wheat" design which is as rare as hen's teeth to find.  If you're an antique shopper and ever see one of these, please let me know!  They also have bowls, tea cups and saucers in this design.  My grandparents were wheat farmers in Oklahoma so this speaks to me.

My newest "babies".

This is a Fire King Restaurant Ware 5 compartment grill plate.  This is good for people who like to keep their food from touching.. LOL!

And these fun fired on green salt and peppers.

Chef Dayle prepared baked pork chops using Shake N Bake, fried potatoes with onions and buttered corn for dinner.  Mmm.

l am going to work on getting my Valentine tablecloth on this weekend.  I look forward to getting out my cute little heart things.  Now is a perfect time for love and hearts, don't you think?

My Grandparent's Blue Cabinet

Hello my friends, thanks for stopping by for a visit.  I appreciated all of your nice comments about the rescued family furniture we have in our home.  I want to introduce a third piece we also brought home from Oklahoma. To be more precise, we fit the kitchen queen cabinet and the 5 legged oak table inside our Peugeot station wagon and this was wrapped in plastic and tied on the top of our car.  :-)  We looked like the people from Oklahoma during the dustbowl who left "home" and headed out west in the 1930s.  This primitive blue cabinet was in the chicken house.  Grandpa used it to store things, it had several old oil cans in it.  Thus there are lots of oil stains on the poor old dear.  It was painted a LONG time ago with milk blue paint.

It's been in our garage for a long time and I've wanted to bring it into the house because I love it because it was my grandparent's.  I had been looking for an additional old cabinet to sit next to my kitchen queen as one can't have too much storage, can one?  And then a lightbulb went on over my head 💡 and I thought of the blue cabinet.. and my dear long-suffering husband hauled it out of the garage with a hand-truck and used an air compressor to clean the dust and dirt off the top and inside.  And.. TA-DAH.. here she is.

Now.  I know some of you will appreciate the primitive condition of this and some will go.. EWWWW.. and suggest I use it for firewood.  I posted this on my Facebook group, Jadeite Junkies and was amazed at how many suggestions I got - 427 reactions and 207 comments!!  The consensus was to just clean it with water and leave it as is, possibly use a feed and wax on the inside.  Here it is with the doors off.  We are going to try to find old wavy glass and have it installed in the doors.  Many people thought we should add chicken wire in the doors, but it's obvious that it was originally glass, so glass it will be.

I have begun using warm water with a little bit of dish soap and scrubbing the shelves.  No small amount of dust and dirt is coming off.  :-)  I ordered Howard's Wax & Feed to condition the inside.

This darling has a strong will to live.. it's solid as a rock.

I have two more rows of my Meadow blanket to show you.

This is 8 of the 15 colors, so I'm halfway done and will soon have completed the first whole set of colors.. yay!

I just snapped this photo, the sun is out and illuminating our dining room.  I want to put my valentine tablecloth on the table but my dear husband is adamant that it's too early.  What do you think?  :-) 💗

Dayle made Chinese Noodle Casserole for our dinner, funny story is our family calls it "dog food".  When I first saw it I go... ewww.. it looks like dog food and the name stuck.

"Chinese Noodle Casserole"

1 lb. lean ground beef
1 Cup diced celery
1 Onion, diced
1 Cup sliced mushrooms
1 Green pepper, diced (optional)
1/4 Cup soy sauce
1/2 Cup water
1/2 Cup rice (uncooked)
1 can of cream of mushroom soup
1 can cream of chicken soup
dash pepper
1 can Chinese noodles (crunchy kind)

Brown meat and onions together - add other veggies and saute for a bit, then add all other ingredients.  Bake in covered casserole for 30 minutes at 350 degrees.  Uncover and bake for another  30 minutes.  Cover top of casserole with noodles for the last 15 minutes.

NOTE:  We *always* double this recipe as it's so good re-heated.

I have a zoom board meeting for the Friends of Multnomah Falls, so I better sign off and get ready for it.

In 48 hours we will have a new President and our first female and person of color for Vice President of the USA.  We watched an hourlong history of Kamala Harris last evening and I was very impressed and feel she is an excellent choice to help lead our country and unify it.  If you have heard negative things about Kamala, I beg you to give her a chance and not listen to negative and conspiracy theories.

Today is Martin Luther King's birthday - it's time to bury racism and prejudice against people of color once and for all.  Will you join me?

((hugs)), Teresa :-)
