Books and Boards

When I finished my last book.. I went to iBooks on my iPad and looked for something to pique my interest.  I found this book and saw that it was written by the same author of "Water for Elephants" which had been on the Best Seller List and had been made into a movie.  So, ::bonk:: on the buy button - all I have to use to buy a book is my fingerprint.  Easy.  It was a really good book!  Set in Scotland during WWII, the main characters are from Philadelphia high society, interesting to see how those people behave and think.  I just finished it...

So I needed a new book!  Since I enjoyed that one I thought I would get this one and try it.

And in the literary vein.. Kristi is going to do a project with her sister where you take and old book and cut the pages into an art piece.. so she ordered a lot of 10 old books online.  In the lot of old volumes was this one..

I said.. "Don't cut that one up!"  She had never heard of Jane Eyre so we both told her what a good book it is and encouraged her to read it.

This one was printed in 1870 I think.

As a calligrapher and lover of the print medium I love this page.

I might read this, too.  The text is old-fashioned and fun to see how they used to write.

Dayle and I ventured out on the front porch last evening to see how the project is looking.

I am so happy to see the front porch of our little old farmhouse, built in 1907, getting a new lease on life.

Oh how I look forward to seeing this project done and all the debris cleared.. and the Autumn rains will water the front yard and things will look better.

The big discussion now is how will we finish the cedar deck boards?  I am recommending that we use the same color as our back deck boards and put a protective finish over the stain.  Kristi and Travis think we should paint it.  Dayle is thinking paint would be good but is also leaning towards my stain and finish idea.  What is YOUR vote?  :-)

Richard added a few more rows this morning and then started to feel badly and had to go home.  So, this is where he got to today.

There was a lot of excitement this morning when Kristi found a big frog on the back deck.  I went out to take a photo of him and scared him and he leaped into the pond and then crawled up on a rock.. do you see him?

Ribbit.

Dayle collected eggs and was surprised to see this tiny egg.  The one on the left is a normal sized egg.  Apparently it's called a "Fairy egg".

Amy posted this cute photo of Honey on FB this morning.  What a cute little pup.

I had to show you my crab salad I had when Gracie and I met for lunch.  We both always have a crab salad.. it's our "thing".  Our swim was also good, the pool was not overcrowded and I had my own favorite lane the whole time.  :-)

Speaking of which, I'm off to swim again soon.  After a few weeks away, I'm getting back "into the swim of things".  I hope you have a wonderful weekend!!  ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  1. Jane Eyre is a great book, and yours is a beautiful edition - definitely a keeper. I would stain decking, as I think it wears better than paint, and nothing beats the natural look of wooden flooring. We had the same debate about our oak front door. There are so many beautiful colours of paint to choose from, but we're staining it again instead.

  2. I think I would like to join both you and Gracie for some crab salad, yum! Love all the photos of the lake vacation. Sorry you had to stay away from the lake this year. I am sending Dayle some positive and healthy thoughts. Good luck with the porch finish, it is going to be spectacular! Hugs to you Teresa.

  3. Very nice post ....I DID find Mr. Froggy even without the bigger picture. LOL

Paint vs. stain ......I'd go with stain. In my opinion, it doesn't show wear spots as quickly as paint does.

  4. Hmmm all sorts of interesting subjects in this post :-) Several days ago I saw a tiny little frog on our front porch...less than an inch...so tiny compared to yours! I think old books are fun to admire and sometimes read, too. I vote for stain on the porch, but have paint on my front porch, and it has worn well. Honey is so sweet to see. xx

  5. Pretty new porch. I can imagine sitting there and rocking and knitting. My vote is stain.
There are so many projects that use old books and I always cringe. I love old books and hate the thought of them being destroyed. I know others don’t feel the same and that’s okay. :-). I’m glad Jane Eyre was saved though.
That salad looks wonderful. I miss our lunches together. Give Gracie a hug for me next time you meet.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  6. My book club read Jane Eyre last year and I really enjoyed it as an adult rather than a college student. The writing style is beautiful and I found myself getting lost in the old fashioned rhythm of the words.

  7. I need to start doing audio books. I find that in my down time, all I want to do is knit. So I can listen and knit, killing two birds with one stone. Lordy, don't let Kristi cut hat book!!!

  8. I'm so glad you saved the old volume from destruction. I've seen the cute projects using old books and I must admit to wincing. Your porch is looking great and I vote with you on the stain. Cedar boards should be shown and not painted, in my humble opinion. Oh, the salad sure looks tasty. Have a great weekend. ♥

  10. What a treasure of a find with the Jane Eyre book, that's definitely not one for the art project. You're porch is starting to look great and I would vote stain too. We have an old house with polished floorboards and I really love the character that comes through in the natural wood. That crab salad made me want to dive right in and have a bite. Yum! xx Susan

  12. Your crab salad looks delicious! And your porch is coming along nicely. What a nice place to sit that will be. Cute little froggy. I miss ours - he left a week or so ago and we have not seen him since! I'm reading "Ape House" by Sara Gruen and really enjoying it. I had read both Water for Elephants and At the Water's Edge and liked them as well. Have a great week Teresa! I'm off to Hilton Head (work) tomorrow.
