A Hat for Michael

Our grandson Michael is living here now and did not have a warm hat as he was living in California.  I decided to fix that situation post haste.  I had a skein of denim colored yarn which I thought was just the thing for a young man.  I didn't use a pattern, just made this up as I went.  I thought I'd add some stripes of color and found 3 and he liked the idea too.

I crocheted in double crochet rounds, the colors I did in 3 dc shells, then crocheted down and back up in the back loop to make the ribbed roll brim which will keep his ears warm.

I have a small table by my easy chair where I lay my laptop computer and iPad, I have my pens and crochet hooks in a plexiglas holder on the side, cameras in the basket drawers.  I had room for some decorations so I put my little tree that has a little train going around the bottom and a sparkly Santa and sleigh.  I do love having holiday decorations around me.  :-)

Yesterday we put my Dept 56 North Pole village pieces on the piano top.  First I lay down a batting base (snow) and then take each house out of it's box and install the light strings.  Dayle is responsible for plugging them all in.  I must endure much grumbling during this procedure.  In fact he says he hates these houses.  Nevertheless, he does this for me.  Unfortunately, 3 of the houses lights won't come on so I just ordered more replacement bulbs.  :-)  Of course there is a skating pond at the North Pole, right?

A few of my newer pieces are this gazebo with Santa and Mrs. Claus inside.

I'm very excited to add this new building.. it's Northwind Knitters!

It's got a little shop on the side for Mittens, Muffs and Mukluks.  See the board with knitted hats on the porch?

This sign hangs off the side of the building.

It comes with a little elf hanging mittens and a hat out on a line strung between two decorated trees.  So cute!

And a nod to Dayle's 32 years as a railroad engineer for Southern Pacific RR - a caboose made into a cafe.

Now, time for me to clean up the mess from all this decorating and get it all perfectly tidy and neat.  Do you decorate?  Please tell us how you're doing and what you do.

  3. Love the design of Michael's hat, Teresa! Everything is looking like Christmas, my friend. Your village is beautiful! We haven't put our's up for years because one it takes up so much room and two it's a lot of work! I agree with Dayle! That being said I do love it when it's all assembled. We have been decorating for the last couple of weeks and hopefully I will soon do a post. ♥

We put up the tree today. It is a tad early for us, but who cares? Its artificial and I could not leave the house today as I had planned, so we decorated!

  6. We don't decorate a lot. I have a few winter-related decorations out and of course, lights outside on our fence for others to enjoy. We have candles in our road facing windows, but they are there all year 'round.

  7. Your grandson is very handsome and the hat looks great. Your Christmas village is wonderful and the new additions so perfect. I think the grumbling is well worth it to see all those lovely miniature creations. I used to collect small houses and had many. Gave them away years ago which my husband was none too happy about as he liked them, too. Kinda wish I had just stuck them away to keep like I do with so many things. Oh well. Have a good Thursday!

  9. Your Christmas decorations look amazing and I love that picture of the front of your house at the top of your blog. Michael's hat looks very good on him. Stripes always make beanies look better don't they? My daughter put our decorations up last weekend and at night the front of our house looks very colorful. I don't think there'd be room for another ornament on our tree either.

  12. What a handsome young man he is decked out in his new hat. I have decorated but not as much as usual as we are going away. We leave for the mainland on the 15th, exciting times. What a joy to see all your wonderful houses, the knitting shop was a real delight.

  13. Great hat for Michael Teresa - well done! Love the Northwind Knitters building - PERFECT!!! And the little caboose cafe is so cute.

I have not done any decorating yet - have not had the time. Fletch put a wreath on our front door (I'll get a picture at some point) and put some lights on our back patio and around the trunk of our weeping cherry tree, but that's it so far. I used to do much, much more when Colin was little and living at home. As much as I love decorations, our house is so small it makes me a little crazy to have too many things around.

  17. Your Christmas decorations are so lovely. My hubby grumbles anytime he has to put anything festive up so our decorating usually ends up being what I can handle each year. Michael's hat looks like it will keep his head toast warm for the winter. xx Susan

  18. Nice hat you made for Michael. I'm sure he'll like keeping himself a bit warmer that way. I have enjoyed Dept 56 houses ever since I worked at Hallmark years ago. Nice new shop! I have Lilliput Christmas houses on a shelf in the dining room. I need to put lights around that town again. Stay warm...it's chilly in our area. Below freezing for a few nights. Need to pull a few more plants into garage even they're ok down to 10 degrees. Not going to lose my cannas. Save for next spring! Enjoy the Christmas season. Hugs!

  20. I'm doing a little more decorating this year as I'll have more guests come by but I always have two lighted trees. One for my neighbors to see through the window and one for me! Thanks so much for your blog Teresa. It's a highlight to my day. Happy Holidays.
