We attended a Volunteer Training Workshop for the Friends of Multnomah Falls on Friday. It was held at McMenamins Edgefield in the ballroom. This place is actually magical. It was built as a poor farm in 1911, it was also a nursing home when I took my Girl Scout Troop to visit in 1982 hoping to cheer the residents. The big building was being faced with demolition when the McMenamin brothers stepped in, in 1990, and bought it and then proceeded to spend years fixing it up and now it's a destination boutique hotel and brewery with several restaurants in the buildings.
The most amazing part of this place is they hired a bunch of artists and just let them paint murals and paintings all over the place. The mural in the ballroom is one example. Our presentation at the meeting was about waterfalls and canyoning. :-)
Shirley took my phone over to the window and snapped this photo for me.. the pink Magnolia is gorgeous against the old brick of the building.
Look at what the artists did to the exposed pipes!! LOL!
After a nice session and pizza and salad for lunch in the ballroom we headed out in the beautiful afternoon.. a closer look at the pink Magnolia. :-)
This is the side of the main building and you can see their water tower.
Behind the main building is the Power Station which is a bar and restaurant. The main lodge building has the Black Rabbit which is their nicest eatery.
There is a patio by the Power Station where you can dine outside when the weather is fair.. it's a popular spot and the BBQ grill is in action.
Our 49th anniversary dinner was at Bumpers Grill & Bar - our "go to" place for steak. I had filet mignon and Dayle had the rib eye.. he tried it for a change but is going to go back to the filet next time. The steak is laid on a pool of the most delicious bordelaise sauce.. yum!!
We shared a creme brulee for desert and they stuck a candle in it for our anniversary. Nummers!
I'm so enjoying the special daffodils in our big pot that I ordered from Breck's.
Our Star Magnolia is in bloom.. I love it.
Aren't these flowers something else?
Here is what the buds look like and they emerge from a fuzzy casing.
I was out this morning walking around the yard taking photos of the emerging flowers and saw this Japanese Skimmia in bloom.
The Mahonia is blooming too.
Another new variety in the big pot is opening.. but they aren't fully open and their heads are still bent. I'll show you a better photo when they hold their head's up.
Richard painted the backs of the steps up to the deck red as the wood was old and didn't look nice.
Dayle took a trek out into our woods to photograph the newly bloomed Trilliums for me. Pretty!! There is Creeping Myrtle ground cover in our woods.
They are SO pretty right when they bloom before bugs and bunnies start munching on them.
Do you have Trilliums where you live? They should never be picked or they may not bloom for another 7 years.
I guess that's all my news on this end.. what's new with you?
((hugs)), Teresa :-)
I love the artwork at McMenamins, especially the detailed pipework. Great choice for dessert too, crème brulee is my favourite and now I'm craving some! xx Susan
ReplyDeleteWe do have trilliums in Virginia. It's wonderful to get a glimpse of them and your's are beautiful! Your anniversary meal looks delicious. I'm so glad new uses are found for old buildings. I think we build too many new buildings and tear down the old. It's a foolish thing in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteI love trillium! I LOVE Filet mignon. Your spring is keeping my spirits up!!!!
ReplyDeleteWhat gorgeous flowers. I enjoyed my visit. First time here. Blessings.
ReplyDeleteThe mural in the dining room as such fun. Very talented artists, making for some great talking points. I loved the magnolia too, such beauty. I also enjoyed the little tour around your garden, Spring is emerging with some great colour.
ReplyDeleteYour trilliums remind me of growing up in Wisconsin and seeing them growing in the wild, they are protected there. That is a gorgeous mural in the dining room and great that the buildings were saved. My red magnolia is blooming too, they are wonderful trees.
ReplyDeleteI'm envious of all the beautiful flowers and trees surrounding your home:)
ReplyDeleteGood for them restoring that old homestead and turning it into a fun destination. Definitely my kinda place to visit. One with history. And the murals add a lot of character. Everything is blooming around here but our daytime temps have just started to climb into the 80s so summer is just around the corner. Boo! Will soon be too hot to do much outdoors. Gotta enjoy it while I can.
ReplyDeleteOMG ...I’m so envious of that gorgeous Star Magnolia... infact the whole floral tour filled my heart with hope that Spring would be just around the corner...Right now we're experiencing a ' freak" snow storm (15-30cm) so there are no flowers in sight !!! However your post was inspiring and I truly enjoyed today's post... Big Hugs
ReplyDeleteGood morning Teresa,
ReplyDeleteI always wanted to try one of the McMenamin’s restaurants when Mandy lived there but we never made it. I love the artwork there, especially those pipes! Such imagination! Your flowers are beautiful. And fillet mignon is one of my favorite foods ever. Well, that and prime rib. Yours looks delicious. I hope you’re having a lovely day.
Blessings,
Betsy
Love your photos. The last of our snow disappeared yesterday during a rainy day, so we don't have any flowers. It was nice to see that spring has arrived in your neck of the woods!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing all the pretty flower pics! I enjoyed viewing the whole post. While I have enjoyed attending a few meetings the last two days, I have spent more time than I like trying to find a power cord, sort papers, and figure out how to get my laptop to access one of my email accounts. I really dislike having to keep track of security codes. Please share with me sometime how you track them.
ReplyDeleteMy friend Fran will celebrate her 83 Bday on Tuesday and is coming over to celebrate tomorrow for tea :) xxxx
What a lovely building! As I mentioned in your last post, I currently binge watching a tv show which is filmed in Oregon (mostly Portland) but I'm in love with the area! I wish I could have visited your state when I went to the US a couple of years ago. It looks so beautiful!
ReplyDeleteHappy Anniversary to you both! Love all your pictures. What an wonderful restoration and amazing artwork...those pipes!! So many gorgeous flowers to see where you are. Happy weekend dear Teresa XXX
ReplyDeleteHi,great photos,lovely stories too.x
ReplyDeleteThe property my parents had with a woods on it in Illinois had the wake robin (red trillium) on it. The white ones were in Wisconsin on property they had in the north/central part of that state.
